Developer demolishes pub without consent
MAIDSTONE Council is taking a developer to task after destroying a listed pub in Leeds without plan- ning approval. Housebuilder CastDevelopments,
from Whitstable, demolished the Ten Bells with a view to using the site for housing. The applicant defended the per- manent closure of the pub by saying it was no longer viable and the vil- lage was still catered for by The George Inn. The 18th century pub, in Upper
Street, was closed in 2012, but the council had not given authorisation for it to be knocked down. The planning department at Maid-
stone Council granted consent for it to be converted into two homes, with a further three properties to be built to the rear. Although it had approved the demolition of some later extensions to the pub, the major part of the buildingwas to remain. Cast Developments was advised
to apply for retrospective planning permission for the demolition, but a

council spokesman conceded it would be difficult to reinstate a building of that age once it had been demolished. He said: “We have launched an enforcement investigation and we will be ordering the developers to re- place the
building.Although the pub was not listed,we do require it to be replaced with something in keeping with the conservation area.” Cast Developments has now lodged a retrospective planning ap- plication to demolish the pub along with a second application to build a

News Call for end to
quarry work LENHAM residents living near Shepherd’s Farm Quarry have asked KCC to call time on Bretts and get the land restored. It follows a call from the quarry-
ing company to relax conditions re- quiring it to reinstate the area two years after extraction ends. But locals say the firm has used
the quarry on an ad-hoc basis to delay the need to reinstate the land and should not be given more time. Neighbour Sally King claimed the quarry hasn’t been actively worked in the five years she has lived in Rose Lane at Lenham Heath. She added: “Due to the lack of maintenance on the land, the growth of ragwort is prolific.” Others said the area has been “mothballed” and restoration was no longer a priority. As a result the areawas a magnet for trespassers. Dr Robert Kennet, also of Rose

Lane, said: “We would like KCC to reiterate that the date of August 25, 2025, is an absolutely fixed date on which to cease mineral extraction.” Mrs King adds: “If this extension
is allowed, others will follow – there must be a finite end date. “Bretts made a public declaration
to abide by the rules imposed upon them and they should honour their agreement.”
