UPBEAT TIMES • July 2014 • 23 2014 July Aries (3/21 - 4/20)
It’s funny that we use the term bump- ing into someone when we happen to cross paths with a person we know and perhaps haven’t seen in awhile or are now seeing them in an unex- pected place. This month you might have to redefine what bumps, falls, and bams mean in your life - how they bring up memories, opportunities and connect you with allies you didn’t even imagine you had. A bump might even mean a baby for some of you.
Taurus (4/21 - 5/20)
Confrontations could be coming up in ways you did not expect, and the rea- son this is exciting is that it indicates that you’ve made a lot of progress in moving beyond your comfort zones this year. Because of this, new doors have opened or soon will. If health and home have been areas you’ve struggled in for awhile, both are going to lighten up to allow a greater flow of ease and harmony. This is also a great month for investments.
Gemini (5/21 - 6/20)
The question of love, perhaps even if to love, or what, who, where, when, how, and why…to love, may be the questions that occupy your mind and heart space for a least a little while this month. Love and its manifestations, like thoughts, are things with wings, that seem as fleeting indeed. Then again, love is what makes us levitate, what enables us to fly. As corny as it sounds, it is what makes the world go around. Live and love to the fullest!

Cancer (6/21 - 7/22)
During the first half of July you may experience at least one profound and blessed ending that is far-reaching in your life. Under the light of the moon, the waves may come to wash away tears, bonfires, and castles made of sand. Then, a certain stillness may fill the air as your dream, followed by dawn, sunlight…and many new begin- nings. Allow yourself to savor some rest, a vacation, or pampering in some way. Your soul needs it.
Leo (7/23 - 8/22)
You might feel a bit as though you’re in an incubation period for the first half of the month, but with joyful an- ticipation of what you suspect is go- ing to be worth the wait. Get ready for a wild ride! If things you wanted to press forward were on pause for most of the year, they’re about to take off and you with them. The New Moon late July with Jupiter now in your sign for a year’s time, you’re free to take chances in love, creativity, and life!
Virgo (8/23 - 9/22)
People might not get and appreciate you at times, but it should not matter as long as you’ve been truthful, first and foremost with yourself. You’re currently in an optimal position now to change your title in some way, per- haps even your name or a part of it. Maybe you’re advancing within your career, raising your standards along you’re your status, or maybe it’s sim- ply time to treat yourself to a make- over or a new wardrobe.
If you love life, don’t
waste time, for time is what life is made up of.
Bruce Lee Libra (9/23 - 10/22)
Edges can help or harm. They can cut things. Edges keep things in place, clearly defined, safely, neatly placed or organized inside of a box. But play- ing it safe is not what you’re called to do this month. Perhaps there is some higher part of yourself asking you to think and act outside the box, to dare to be extra edgy and quirky and weird. Throw all (or at least some) of your god awful caution and indecision to the wind! Edge is becoming of you.
Scorpio (10/23 - 11/22)
Travel, foreign people and places are particularly suitable for the expansive state you may currently find yourself in. Your career is going to be a major highlight this summer, possibly in you finally gaining the recognition and re- ward that you’ve long sought after. At first you may feel reluctant to grab the spotlight, but after somebody pushes or pulls you there out you’ll get into it. Publications and journaling are also of importance now.
Sagittarius (11/23 - 12/21)
The money or whatever makes life easier for you on the physical plane will start pouring in with greater ease this month. With that, you’ll be all ready to do one of the things you love best, travel. Whether a cruise or a long drive, a flight or dive into spiritual dimensions, adventure is a must, and the more who join or unite with you the better. Pack your trail mix and body glitter, because Burning Man might follow you wherever you go.

Capricorn (12/22 - 1/19)
Right how you are in the hot seat, in many situations, whether at home, at work, or on a plane to Japan. Despite that you’ve been in the hot seat most of the year with more than your share of challenges being there, you’ve man- aged to keep your cool pretty well over- all. The real progress will begin mid-July, as you see the fruits of your labors pay off. Relationships also stabilize, and your commitments will deepen or new ones will be made.
Aquarius (1/20 - 2/18)
The great theme you seem to be faced with currently is taking the sig- nificant relationships in your life to the next level. This could mean both end- ings and evolution, but it will be clear what can no longer be maintained if there is to be progress. It could even be that old and conventional traditions give you a sort of comfort this month, as so much is changing rapidly and radically, even for you to assimilate. Take whatever time your need.
Pisces (2/19 - 3/20)
While things have been going well for many under your sign, they’re likely about to get even better. Specifically, you could expect or at actively seek out for fun and adventures with friends and loved ones. Romance could be a highlight. Whatever happens you will probably notice that your options have expanded. More people are showing up, more invitations are appearing, and more abundance unfolding in many areas of your life.

Dementia? Forget about it! by Chance Massaro, M.A. •
powcom@sonic.net
SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ Baby boomers have long surprising to American Culture. When we were
five, the schools were
unprepared and class size explod- ed. When we got to college we attended some classes in auditori- ums. Thank goodness for a grow- ing economy in the 60s and 70s so that most of us people found jobs. And now it is the boomers our- selves who are surprised.
Living
longer than any generation here- tofore, we have found ourselves susceptible to a host of age related maladies that were not so well known before. Like Alzheimer’s and the 20+ other types of dementia we are dealing with today. Alzheimer’s disease is generating more fear in boomers than cancer or heart dis- ease. We see in our 80 and 90 year old parents the disturbing ravages of mental decay and we get wor- ried.
We become hyper vigilant; no-
ticing every mistake in memory or conversation and wonder “Is this it? Is this innocent ‘senior mo- ment’ the beginning of the ragged end?” Knock it off! We absolutely must stop worrying about some- thing about which the cause or cure has eluded scientists now for over 40 years. Want the simple rea- son? Worry is bad for your brain. Worrying about dementia leads to, you guessed it, dementia. Cor- ticoloids,
stress hormones cre-
ated by the adrenals when we worry, increase the abilities of the amygdala (stress center of the brain) and decrease the abili- ties of the hippocampus (memory center).
So Here is What You Can Do Instead of Worrying
1. Keep score of the things your
brain does well every day 2. Eat a heart healthy diet 3. Drink a lot of water
4. Hang around fun, interesting people
5. Learn new things (games, language, new routes) regu larly
6. Change your patterns, give up the stuff you do all the time 7. Forgive yourself. Forgive oth- ers.
8. Relax about sleep and get more of it
9. Whenever you forget some thing, learn and forget it
10. Allow other people do be who they are
11. Meditate, pray; focus your mind on “Thank You”
12. Look for beauty all the time.
With this regimen one generates positive chemicals and can pro- duce new brain cells. Our brains are plastic and can recreate them- selves. Much of the problems we see in elders’ thinking comes from lack of engagement and a sense of purpose. Stay connected to positive, interesting people, have a bunch of goals and have as much fun as you can (read UP BEAT
TIMES religiously!).
