our family table…”tho’ an old man, I am but a young gar- dener.” Eight years older than Jefferson, John Adams, by un- canny coincidence, also died on July 4th, 1826, the 50th an- niversary of the Declaration. If you travel to New York, please take time to visit not only the Empire State Building but go to see, up close, after an exciting ferry ride, The Statue of Liber- ty in Liberty Park. Perhaps it is due to my family heritage that it holds so much meaning for us. It may be possible to stop and see Ellis Island as well. Like Jefferson, many of us “cannot live without books.” Every 4th of July, we consult the 1999 edition of our “The Original White House Cook Book of 1887.” Incredibly de- lightful, avoid any later “up- date” those are not half so “up- beat!”
