Sharing a love for Storytelling...

everybody’s job, but for the Head of Pre-Prep at Monkton Combe School, Kathryn Morrell, it goes hand in hand with preparing children for life. “Sharing a book with children is about more than simply helping them learn how to read. I love that a book can be brought to life. When I am reading to children I can see how telling a story can spark imaginations, drive creativity and I see how the morals in a story help guide children on the right path in life. Often we see books as a tool to teach children to read, however they offer so much more. From a man on the moon to deep sea creatures, from talking dogs to superheroes, stories open up whole new worlds to children, and inspire them. Helping children to develop their own love of reading is helping them to see infinite possibilities for their future”.

Kathryn shares with us some advice on how to engage your children when reading them a story:

aving the skill to tell a story and connect with people’s emotions isn’t part of

• Look at the illustrations on the cover and read the title of the book, pointing to the words as you read them. Explain what the word ‘title’ means if they do not know. Ask the child what they think the book may be about using the illustrations and title as clues

• Read the story using lots of expression, intonation, gestures and different voices and accents for the different characters

• Build anticipation

• Encourage your child to join in and repeat any repetitive phrases

• Pause throughout the story, checking understanding of the text by asking them particular questions and any challenging vocabulary. Encourage them to look at the pictures and to predict what happens next

• Don’t forget you don’t always need a book to be able to tell a story
