for ten years now and never before experienced the type of winter we are experiencing this year. Frozen pipes, barn washroom frozen and unusable, ice, ice everywhere ...making just walking around treacherous. My good natured hus- band has a melt down ( no pun intended and no actual melting) once a week about the winter con- ditions. He see’s absolutely no beauty in this years snow scape nor any redeeming feature at all. The horses and dogs seem to like it as they play and run in the snow flakes and big mounds of snow- drifts but for us two legged folk its been a harsh season. We’ve even run out of places

to put the snow and doing a double driveway every time it snows has

country is not always an ideal situation. A lot of city dwellers who’ve pur- chased farms from me this past summer and fall have gotten a shocking taste of the difference of living through a bad win- ter while living outside of their familiar city life style. It certainly is not

for everyone. And you definitely need equipment to keep things working properly and driveways cleared. One of our boarders who has been looking for a farm of her own told me this winter has given her a new appreciation of how much work it is to keep a farm up and see is actually reconsidering this type of purchase. For me, outside of the extra

work load and the scary aspect of driving on all these back roads I travel in my pursuit of selling rural properties, I love the winter. I love the soft snow falls, the

way the trees look all coated in a thick ice glass after an ice storm, the prettiness of the white, white snow sitting on all the branches of the big blue spruces which line our long driveway. I like the crunching

mares this winter. Skippy has been a member of our herd since I took her home eight years ago from an old farmer who was selling his rural property. She and her friend Lady had been together all their lives and Skippy has been very much missing her dear friend who passed two winters ago. The win- ters are hard on the old ones. We are sure that Lady was waiting to greet Skippy with a loud long neigh when she crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Soon spring will be here, ( we

hope!) and then the season of mud will be upon us and we will be wishing we had winter back. Or at least I will. When I called my hus- band the other day and said isn’t it beautiful out, he hung up on me. I guess he’ll be happier in the mud.

underfoot and the way my black and red thick coated gorgeous Ger- man Shepherds look against the white backdrop of snow as we walk my trail around the farm. The sheer joy they feel plays forward to me and makes me forget my prob- lems and cares as I just enjoy the moment. Our blue jay group who greet
