employers all over the world. The MEng can lead to highly-paid professional career opportunities in your chosen specialism.

The MEng

The MEng is a professional degree which meets the requirements of engineers who want to expand their knowledge within a specific discipline or who are looking to move into interdisciplinary areas. In the USA the MEng is considered to be a terminal degree. For those of you not familiar with this phrase it simply means that it is the highest academic degree within a given field of study. Masters degrees in engineering normally focus on specific areas within the subject, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer

engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering.

The MEng differs from the Master of Science (MS) engineering degree. Generally speaking the MEng is usually a coursework- only degree designed for students who want to enhance their educational background. The degree is normally flexible because it enables students to gain a greater amount of professional skills. You may also take this degree and decide to take up coursework in another subject, for example you could take up coursework in business, as well as your advanced engineering courses.

A MEng degree can be completed during two semesters of full-time study and especially lends itself to short-term projects that are tailored towards the needs of industry.

Applying

For admission to graduate programs in engineering, most universities in the USA require students to have a baccalaureate degree in engineering. However, students with degrees in mathematics or science can also be selected but are likely to be required to take additional coursework. A large number of universities will also ask applicants to submit the following:

1. An official transcript which provides the academic record. 2. Letters of recommendation. 3. Statement of Purpose (Indicating academic interests, past achievements, future goals).

4. Score sheet of Test of English as foreign language exam (TOEFL).

5. Score sheet of Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

6. Certificates of merit proving achievements in extra- curricular and co-curricular activities.

The best way to find out what a particular school requires is to speak to the university's admissions department. They will be able to tell you the correct application process for the course you are considering.
