STUDY COMPUTING, ENGINEERING OR PHYSICAL SCIENCE DEGREES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL LANCASHIRE


The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) has four main areas of activity: Computing, Engineering, Physics and Astrophysics, and


Mathematics.


The School's courses integrate the three elements of teaching, research and engagement with wider society, to bring enhanced benefits to students, staff, industry, government and the wider community.

It is also worth noting that the School’s facilities are located centrally on the campus, which are no more than 5-10 minutes’ walk from all other facilities and amenities, including halls of residence.


Computing


The School works in close collaboration with colleges and universities globally, including a joint MSc course with Hanoi University. UCLan also offer a unique burst-mode MSc course in Agile Software Projects designed for the software industry. Research within this area focuses on human-centred computing and includes EU funded projects.


Engineering


The School places a strong emphasis on practical applications underpinned by formal analysis and theory, and study is enhanced by specialist workshops and laboratories.


Research in Engineering focuses on automated data analysis and imaging, advanced manufacturing, medical imaging for diagnosis and treatment and dental and motor tribology. All areas aim to have a real impact on the lives of people and the financial turnover of industry. In 2013 the university established an Engineering Innovation Centre, drawing together our engineering activity to improve benefits for students and industry. This will be underpinned by a new building investment of over £15 million for 2016.


Energy


The University’s energy programme is underpinned by the Centre for Energy and Power Management and combines research into policy development and Engineering solutions to support decisions by international and local industry. Staff and researchers support postgraduate taught provision in Renewable Energy Engineering. A number of research initiatives investigate the effectiveness and practicality of power generation


and management approaches.

understanding and personal attributes necessary to become self-motivated, self-confident and self-sufficient. The university works with a number of industrial collaborators, professional bodies and learned societies in supporting teaching, research and commercial activities.


Physics and Astrophysics Research in the School spans a range of disciplines such as nanophysics, the physics of magnetism, the physics of solar plasmas, young stars and exploding stars and the establishment of large scale structure in the universe, among many more. Physics and Astrophysics students benefit from studying in dedicated labs and our observatory while Nanophysics is developing knowledge with applications in medical and industrial settings.


Mathematics The School offers BSc(Hons) and MMath programmes in Mathematics, under-pinned by research in pure Mathematics as well as Mathematics used in a range of practical applications. The degrees are approved by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and the fourth year of the MMath programme is particularly suited for those planning to study Mathematics at a higher level.
