treating them right, that has helped FCC keep its turnover down year over year, said Herre. “In 2013 it was 23 percent and the year
before 21 percent,” he said. “Te six or seven years prior it hung around 30 to 35 percent. Over the last several years, in my opinion, we’ve
been leading or nearly leading in low driver turnover. We’re pretty proud of that. I think what we do in communicating with our drivers is what leads us to that success.” Herre’s ability to manage his company well
and keep good drivers in his trucks doesn’t surprise those who know him well. Duane Acklie, chairman of Crete Carrier Corp., hired him right out of college as a dispatcher and saw pretty quickly that he had potential. “He was with us for approximately 20
years,” said Acklie. “He was an operations supervisor, then head of all marketing for
Crete, then president of Shaffer. “He’s done a marvelous job at Fremont Contract Carriers. We’re proud he had his start at Crete and Shaffer, proud of everything he’s done.” Asked what traits Herre had that stood
out, Acklie didn’t hesitate. “Common sense,” he said. “He used
common sense in working out the problems and we knew after a very short time he was going to be a great success. I can’t say enough good things about him.” Dick Reiser met Herre through the
