Issue 4 2014 - Freight Business Journal NDO offers Russia freight option
Norbert Dentressangle Overseas, the forwarding arm of the French-owned logistics company, has launched new services from the UK to Russia. Following its acquisition of the freight forwarding activities of the Daher Group in September last year, Norbert Dentressangle has secured a significant presence in the Russian
market, employing more than 100 people in three offices in Moscow, Ekaterinburg and Saint Petersburg. NDO is offering daily express
and weekly consolidated air freight services, consolidated and
ocean freight/road service options, together with a complete Customs brokerage
along with full load
and clearance service, with
seven customs terminals in key locations. UK commercial manager for
Norbert Dentressangle’s Freight Forwarding division, Matt Young, said: “Russia represents a massive opportunity for UK companies. However, it is still one of the most challenging markets to do business in. While
there are plenty of options for getting freight to Russia, the country’s customs regulations and procedures are extremely complex and subject to change without notice, creating a barrier to successful trading.” NDO could however offer a fast and accurate service that guarantees compliance with local Customs regulations, he said.

The Vietnamese government has introduced a new law (effective from 1 April) 2014, limiting the total combined weight of 20’ and 40’ containers to 20 tons including the tare weight of the container, reports BIFA in its latest newsletter. Enforcement will be rigorous, according to BIFA, with mobile weighbridges deployed on highways across the country; so far 800 trucks have been fined for being overweight. The new weight limit has meanwhile led to port congestion as boxes have had to be restuffed within the dock gates.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority backed, on 20 May, the Competition Commission’s earlier finding that Eurotunnel has an unfair position on the Channel market following the starting up of a ferry service in addition to its Channel Tunnel service. But Groupe Eurotunnel, which took over three ferries belonging to bankrupt state operator SeaFrance and rebranded them MyFerryLink, said that the CMA was seeking to justify the Competition Commission’s original analysis and that a material change in the market had occurred.
