Autumn start date for P3 container line alliance


CMA CGM, Maersk Line and MSC say that they expect their P3 operational alliance to start in Autumn this year – rather later than the mid- 2014 start originally planned as it has taken longer than anticipated to gain approval from a number of national regulatory bodies. In a statement published on 21 May, the


lines said that they were continuing their close cooperation with competition and maritime authorities in Europe and Asia to address questions and to explain the nature of the new alliance. The competition authorities in these two regions have not yet formally produced their verdicts, if any, on the planned alliance. The US Federal Maritime Commission


(FMC) gave its go-ahead for the network on 24 March, subject to certain provisos, including introduction of a close monitoring system to ensure that the lines involved were not abusing


their potential large market share. This also appeared to have assuaged shippers’ groups, with both the Global Shippers’ Forum and the European Shippers’ Council welcoming the move. P3 would be one of the biggest changes to the


pattern of world container shipping services ever. Taken as a single entity, the new alliance would be by far the largest operator on many trades, including Asia-Europe and this has been a factor in the time it is taking to gain regulatory approval in many parts of the world. However, the lines stress that it would be an


operational alliance only; the three individual operators would continue to market capacity separately and there would be cooperation in commercial matters such as pricing. P3 also has major potential implications for the ports industry. Although some provisional
