Driving force behind charity calendar plan

A TEAM of drivers fromWaitrose Distribution Centre in Aylesford are causing a stir after suggesting they would strip for a good cause. Colleagues came up with the

idea of posing Calendar Girls’-style as a great way to raise interest and money for the Pilgrims Hospice in memory of work colleague Mark Boulton, who died recently from cancer. Hewas just 46. Depot manager Mark Stannard

said: “We were all very saddened by Mark’s death, but saw the won- derful support he and his family were given at every stage of his ill- ness and we wanted to do some- thing special as a way of saying thank you to this charity. “This venture to produce a cal-

endar in the style of the infamous Women’s Institute one is really causing a great deal of excitement around the warehouse. “It should bring a smile to a few

faces, and would have very much been appreciated by Mark.” Waitrose is meeting the produc-

tion costs of the calendar and the photographs will be taken by a driver at the Forstal Road depot. Some staff took part in the Pil-

grims Hospice Cycle Challenge on May 4 and raised over £2,000, while others have committed to taking part in the hospice’s Pyjama Walk around Ashford in June. Colleagues have already raised £1,500, which they presented to the hospice recently. Nigel Donkin, regional fundrais-

ing manager for the Ashford hos- pice which looked after Mark before his death, said: “The Wait- rose partners are amazing. The fundraising bug has certainly struck and the support of the whole team is really appreciated. I was disappointed not to be shortlisted as the guest model.”

turn has hit man’s alleged best friend, but there’s also a huge in- crease in the number of cats, rab- bits and other small animals being brought in by inspectors. The cattery – which can accom-

modate up to 72 cats and kittens – is bursting at the seams, with cats being sent out to private cat- teries until they can be re-homed. Manager Christine Dooley has

never had to have an animal put down in her 18 years at Leybourne, but says the situation is getting increasingly difficult. She said: “Sadly, every species is suffering as a result of our throwaway society. People get cats or rabbits, believing them to be more independent and less time-consuming than dogs, but then neglect things like routine health care or pet insurance, which leads to costly vets’ bills. “Owners who let their un-neutered cats roam free can expect a greater incidence of injury, often fromfighting, as they seek to find amate, and also get diseases fromabscesses and fleas, to the more routine ticks and worms. “The cats then go on to produce litters of kittens, and so it goes on.”
