downsmail.co.uk Crime head defends office spend

KENT Police and Crime Com- missioner Ann Barnes has de- fended expenditure on her new office, after a claim in a Sunday newspaper that she spent £200,000 on the move. The allegation was among sev-

eral in an article published by the Mail on Sunday. Mrs Barnes de- nied the claims and said her deci- sion to move from the centre of Maidstone to Kent Police HQ in

WI meeting

AYLESFORD and Eccles WI will meet in the Brassey Rooms, Station Road, Aylesford, at 7.30pm on Wednesday, May 28. This will be the annual meeting

and resolution evening, so it is hoped to see as many members as possible. It will be a chance to as- sess the last year, have a say on fu- ture plans and vote for committee members.

Nominations for posts would

also be gratefully received. If you would like to nominate someone, please contact Eileen on 01622 715205. There will also be the usual cup

of tea and some social time once the business is concluded.

Sutton Road will save public money in the long run. Mrs Barnes said: “We recently moved from an of- fice block in the centre of Maid- stone to half the bottom storey of a block on Kent Po- lice’s HQ site. “I made the de- cision to relocate

premises last August, as the con- tract for the old police authority officewas up for renewal. “Had I renewed the Maidstone

office contract itwould have been one of the most expensive build- ings on the police estate. I just couldn’t justify this during times of police cuts. “The move will save around £250,000 over the next five years, and even more in years after that.

It made perfect sense to me to use excess space at Kent Police HQ. The force, as everyone knows, has lost almost a fifth of its workforce in this round of government cuts to police funding. “The move has also eliminated additional, ongoing costs to the public purse by reducing constant travel expenses, not to mention the opportunity costs of every- one’s time.”

WRY Developments has been given planning consent to build eight houses at the former Kent House, Beaver Road, Allington. The building was used for of-

fices before it was demolished; a car wash now occupies the site. The proposal is for five four-bed- room, two three-bedroom and one five-bedroom homes. There will be a mixture of detached and semi-detached properties.

port yard has planning permission for 43 dwellings. To the east is Beaver Road, a DFS furniture su- perstore and a Premier Inn. Maidstone Council’s planning committee voted unanimously in favour of granting outline permis- sion for the layout and scale. De- tails of the design, external appearance and landscaping will be considered later.
