arvel seems to be tightening its grip on the film market with some excellent recent releases. With Spider-man and

Captain America currently sharing silver screen space, Marvel-lous appetites are already being satiated, without the bigger story that’s ready to steal the thunder: the highly anticipated X-Men: Days of Future Past. Te minutia of the film seems cloaked in mystery so far: no details, no leaks, nothing. All we have so far are a bunch of trailers, and boy, they look good. It falls to speculation based on what we know already, so let me give you a heads for this upcoming popcorn-selling, action-packed, ticket-devouring blockbuster.

In-Universe It’s hard to explain the setting of the X-Men movies to

someone that really isn’t into the comic book business. I, however, am well aware of the entire fictional world, so I’ve been asked to give you a little introduction. Here goes: the X-Men films take place in an alternate universe where normal humans are no longer alone. Te world is inhabited by so-called mutants – highly evolved super humans – that have special abilities. Some can manipulate fire or water, while others have grown angel wings out of their backs. Te possibilities are endless, and there are tons of mutants with myriad different abilities. Both races try to live hand in hand. Some however, consider their respective race superior, and this is where conflict arises. Te universe can get quite dark sometimes on the paths of the subjacent flow of racism throughout the whole aspect. Whereas evil Magneto could be seen as the embodiment of darkness, Professor Charles ‘X’ Xavier could be seen as his illuminated counterpart. Xavier is head of a university, completely dedicated to training mutants in their respective abilities.

On the Plot Te plotline of the original comic is fairly complicated. Te

storyline alternates between the (then) present year of 1980, and the future year of 2014. In the future, Sentinels rule a dystopian USA, and mutants are hunted and placed in internment camps. On the eve of a feared nuclear holocaust, the few remaining X-Men send the mind of Kitty Pryde – a mutant that’s able to walk through walls – backward through time, to possess the body of her younger self, to prevent a pivotal event in mutant–human history: the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly.

Let’s stop there. Spoiling the entire movie isn’t perhaps the best strategy to make you warm for it, but suffice to say, if the movie follows the comic, we’ll be strolling in and out of

now has every ace in his hand to make this movie into a drool-evoking adventure for die-hard X-Men fans.”

Singer, who directed X-Men and X2,

the timeline of other X-Men movies. Tat’s actually the only thing we are sure of: it will play prequel, sequel and overlay all in the same couple of hours.

Te Talent It seems to be a hard job working out how everything

should fit in a neat, chronological order. Tat’s the reason why 20th Century Fox decided to choose Bryan Singer as director. Singer, who directed X-Men and X2, now has every ace in his hand to make this movie into a drool- evoking adventure for die-hard X-Men fans.

Another of the franchise’s feature films was X-Men: First Class, which was critically acclaimed because of its tremendous script and mind-blowing acting. How could ‘… Days Past’ be any different with a cast comprising Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Lawrence taking leading roles?

Tat’s one of the reasons why Days of Future Past is so anticipated: all the big stars from all of the previous X-Men movies will be united in a massive, complex, time-traveling adventure. Tis means that we’ll be able to view Halle Berry, Sir Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Famke Janssen in one movie, not to mention Nicholas Hoult. Hoult plays ‘Beast’ in the movie, and we’ve managed to get our mutant paws on the young Brit actor for this interview, overleaf.

Have I good you hooked? Hell, I should ask for a pay rise. Yarreth Plysier
