Multimodal hits a seven-year high 24

Multimodal, the UK and Ireland’s leading supply chain and logistics exhibition, is on track to be the biggest in the show’s seven-year history, and the first to feature both a Royal visitor and a football legend.

Over 280 exhibitors will be welcoming thousands of transport and logistics decision makers at the Birmingham NEC on 29 April-1 May. More than 50 industry experts will take part in panel discussions,

master classes and seminars tackling key trends and helping visitors to smarten up their supply chains and work more efficiently and compliantly. “Multimodal is a one-stop- shop for shippers who need to

find ways of optimising their supply chain and transportation flows,” says the show’s director Robert Jervis. “It enables shippers to compare suppliers, explore new strategies, discover the advantages of different modes,

and network with cargo owners. “And this year, we are delighted

to have attracted many leading speakers to tackle the issues that matter to our visitors.” Multimodal has once again teamed up with the Chartered

Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to design a series of seminars running at the free-to-attend show. The sessions will cover issues from modal shiſt, contracts, humanitarian logistics, and financing the supply chain, to correct packing of containers, portcentric solutions and supply chain strategies for China. On Wednesday 30 April, HRH

The Princess Royal will take part in a panel for charity Transaid. Maeve Magner, a strategic

advisor on supply chain management in developing countries and a Transaid trustee, Transaid’s Gary Forster, Theo de Pencier from the FTA, and Mark Simmons from Norbert Dentressangle will talk about how the logistics industry is saving lives whilst boosting staff performance. Other speakers over the

two-day event will represent companies including the Co- operative, Sainsbury’s, Barclays, Taylors of Harrogate, Network Rail, DP World London Gateway, Unipart Logistics, Peel Ports, PD Ports, M Power Associates, Holman Fenwick Willan and the Commercial Boat Operators Association (CBOA). A session on final mile delivery

will feature on the CILT’s day on Thursday 29 April. Click and Collect purchases will be worth four billion pounds by 2018, according to a recent report by Verdict, and with on-line retail sales set to grow to £107 billion this year, logistics providers are having to find new, cost effective solutions for both customer pick- up and returns. Mark Lawrence, operations

and service director of Collect+ and Stuart Millar, co-founder and CEO of ByBox, and Carl Moore, operations director at Clipper, will join the the panel chaired by CILT chief executive Steve Agg, to take a look at emerging trends and options. “The retail

landscape is

being revolutionised by on-line shopping, and that means finding new delivery channels,” says Robert Jervis. “Final mile delivery and slick

returns procedures are the new differentiators, and we will be bringing together some leading

innovators to share their insight on how it is done.” A panel on the FTA’s day on

Wednesday 30 April will focus on correct packing and accurate weighing of containers. Chaired by Vincent Champion

from World Cargo News, it will bring together Chris Welsh from the FTA, Sharon James from the International Transport Worker’s Federation (ITF), Peregrine Storrs- Fox from TT Club, Andrew McNab from Maritime Transport and Capt. Richard Brough from the International Cargo Handling Co- ordination Association (ICHCA). The panel will be

complemented by a session from Cordstrap’s Marco Muilwijk on how new International Maritime Organisation guidelines affect cargo securing, which takes place on the first day of the show in the Multimodal Knowledge Lounge. Launched this year, the

Knowledge Lounge tutorials complement the seminar panels with in-depth information in a less formal setting. Experts from Wincanton,

Agency Sector Management, Excello Law, and the Supply Chain Academy will be on hand to guide visitors through legislative and regulatory issues, mirroring the information on-line in the Knowledge Zone. The show will also feature a

new Air Freight Pavilion and two airfreight-centered discussion panels hosted by The Loadstar. Panelists from AA Cargo, the

Fresh Produce Consortium, Metro Shipping, dnata and Emirates will discuss the importance of air freight to the UK economy, and take part in a debate about UK airports. The workshops and seminars

are bookable when delegates register for the exhibition on-line at www.multimodal.org.uk. In another first, this year’s show

will see the European Logistics Users Providers and Enablers Group (ELUPEG) hold a session on Collaboration in Multimodal Transport, featuring speakers from the Stobart Group as well as Ford, with case studies from Boots and Premier Foods. The session is open to all visitors, and will look at how mu l t imo d a l transport can
