are sitting in court and another lawyer sends you a draft of a document and you would like to make a quick minor change to the document before sending it back to make the most out of your time sitting and waiting in court. Pulling up the document in your email will not allow you to make any changes to the document. Instead you can only view it. But Documents To Go will allow you to open the document
view it, edit it and, if you want, even create new documents with your iPad, tablet or smartphone. Tis app will also allow you to save the changed document directly to your iPad, tablet or smartphone and directly to iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox and more. Note that this document becomes very handy if your entire file system is in the cloud, especially on iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. Tis would mean that you could simply locate a document on your native drive from your iPad or tablet and either completely revise it or create another brand-new document which can instantly be opened by someone, including your secretary or paralegal, from your desktop drive. Tis same concept holds true for spreadsheets and PowerPoint projects. Tis app is available on both the iOS system and the Android system as well.
QUICKOFFICE, IWORK & OTHERS . Again, to be fair, Documents To Go is not the only Microsoft office document editor available. In fact, some sources recommend the free version of Quickoffice over Documents To Go and any of
the other document editors. Ultimately, this will boil down to personal preference and whether or not you want to pay for the more expensive Documents To Go. Personally, I use Quickoffice because it is a Google product and works well with the Google Drive. But again, this simply boils down to personal preference. Note, however, that while Quickoffice and some of the other editors will work on both platforms, iOS and Android, the iWork editor will only work on the iOS system.
DRAGON DICTATION . Let’s be honest, even the best Bluetooth keyboard for your tablet or iPad is at its very best, awkward. While the proponents of those keyboards give them glowing reviews, most of us find that they are
slow and cumbersome. If you aren’t searching for a key that isn’t in its normal typewriter keyboard space, then you are retyping the key that wasn’t recognized. Obviously it’s better than the on-screen keyboard, but not as optimal as the keyboard for your desktop or laptop computer. Dragon Dictation, available only on the iOS system, provides you an easier way to type those longer documents or more wordy emails. It’s simple to use. You open the Dragon Dictation application and begin dictating the text you want to put into your document. You then simply press an icon for drop-down menu which allows you to cut, copy or paste into any document or application. Te app will also remind you how to paste it into the receiving app by double tapping the area where the text will go. Using Dictation is similar to using Dragon on the desktop. You have the ability to correct, modify, and delete and start over on any dictated sentence or paragraph. Simply tap
on a word to get a drop-down list of alternative suggestions or you can tap the keyboard icon on the bottom left corner and use the standard iOS keyboard to edit and change your text. And, unlike most of the voice recognition software on native smart phones and other devices, you can add punctuation and capitalization on the fly. For example, you can say “Caps On” and Dragon will translate and type every word thereafter starting with a capital letter. To date, none of the native voice recognition programs already on your smart phone or tablet allow you to do this. If you can find a quiet space somewhere in a corner of a restaurant or office and combine this application with any of the document editors and the cloud drive systems above, you can truly find yourself productive when away from your desktop computer.
GOOGLE CHROME . Have you ever needed to use a different or alternative browser on your iPad or your android device? For example, Safari, the native browser on the iPad, does not seem to work well with certain websites especially
Lexis and Westlaw. Of course if you have Lexis Advance, they provide their own app for you to use. But if you don’t have a password for Advance, it would be nice to simply log in using a web browser. Tis is where using an alternative browser such as Google Chrome comes in. Te app gives you the functioning and features of the chrome browser on your iPad including some flash player capability. Use of this app is self-explanatory and mimics the use of the browser on the desktop. Additionally, if you do not have the Google Drive app on your pad or phone, you can use the Google Chrome browser to access your Google Drive where Safari will not access it appropriately. Tis app is available on either the iOS system or the Android system.
LOGMEIN IGNITION . Tis is one of my favorite apps as it allows me to play IT assistant with my associates and even my family. Tat is, if my associate attorney calls me and tells me that she is having trouble with her computer but I am out of the office, I can simply open this app and share her monitor and computer remotely with her and walk her through the steps necessary to correct whatever problems she is having. Moreover, we can also collaborate on preparing documents and other communications, such as emails, etc. using this method as well. I can literally remotely control her computer from my iPad or smartphone. Tis app is also available on either the iOS system or the Android system.
JOIN.ME . Tis app is the cousin of LogMeIn Ignition and in fact is created by the same company. But this app will allow you to host meetings and present files from your iPad with your
join.me account. Moreover, you can easily
take control of the presenter’s computer from your iPad for enhanced collaboration with support. Tis app allows you to view someone else’s screen from your iPhone, iPad or even iPod touch and you can even talk to attendees using VoIP or chat with all participants at once and/or individually. You can
