Shantel’s Wish F
ADVENTURES AT THE BET AWARDS
or almost ten years BET Networks has collaborated with Make-A-
Wish Foundation to grant the wishes of courageous children and teens with life-threatening medical conditions who want to attend the BET Awards in Los Angeles. Last year, Shantel
Shears and her family had the opportunity to go to the BET Awards, after submitting her request to Make-A-Wish Foundation. Shears, who has been battling acute myelocytic leukemia, had one of the best times of her life. Since 2004, wish par-
ticipants attending the BET Awards have gotten the VIP treatment. Escorted throughout the show day by a wish escort and a BET
Corporate Social Responsi- bility executive, Make-A- Wish kids and their families attend private rehearsals, participate in pre-show radio and press interviews, meet celebrities, walk the red carpet and enjoy VIP seating at the show. Shantel’s once-in-a-

a beautiful afternoon in Los Angeles after arriving at LAX from Kansas City, MO, compli- ments of Make-A-Wish Foun- dation. Shears and her family enjoyed a limousine ride from the airport to their hotel and then to the Shrine Auditorium, the BET Awards venue. Once at the Shrine,
they received an all-access pass to exciting, behind- the-scenes activities. The Shears Family loved it! Throughout the day Shears met and took pictures with singer/dancer Marcus Canty, boy band Mindless Behavior, actor/comedian Kevin Hart, R&B artist Tank, teen girl group OMG Girlz, BET President of Mu- sic Programming Stephen Hill, and BET Networks Chairman and CEO Debra Lee, among others. Shears also granted interviews to several radio station disc jockeys in the radio remote room, received gifts from numerous sponsors at the Gifting Suite, and visited the Social Media Lounge. The most exciting part of her wish was access to the closed rehearsal of her favorite artist of all time, Nicki Minaj. After that, Shears said, “Everything else was a bonus.” The next night Shears was a natural as she walked the Red Car- pet along with celebrities for the actual Awards show. At the 2013 BET Awards,
the Network will once again welcome two wish children and their families. Looking forward to attending this year’s show: Kayla Rush- ing from Brookhaven, PA, and Rashai Stacker from Chicago, IL. BET is excited about granting their wishes and continuing the tradition of enriching the lives of its viewers.
