What you should understand about PEF’s trustees

By KENNETH JOHNSON, MAUREEN KELLMAN and RON BROWN Recently we, the elected trustees of

PEF, were asked what we want you, our fellow PEF members and leaders, to understand about us. Here are some of the things we want

you to better understand about us in our role as the union’s trustees: • The roles of the PEF secretary-

treasurer and the trustees are different. However, the secretary-treasurer and the trustees have certain shared responsibilities with respect to the

allocation and accountability of the union’s fiscal resources. For a better understanding of the

trustees’ responsibilities please read Articles 6 and 8 of PEF’s Constitution. • The PEF Constitution and the PEF

Policy Manual (Both are available in the “About” section of the PEF website under the heading PEF Documents.) give some guidelines on how we perform our duties, but we recognize the need to further define our duties as unique needs arise. We are also working hard to create an identity of transparency and independence.

granted full-time union leave. Therefore, we must prioritize the needs of the membership, addressing issues with far- reaching effects first. All issues are important to us. So, while we are balancing our own full-time state jobs and working with limited employee organizational leave, please give us time to come up with recommendations for your issues. • We want to work with you to better

carry out our responsibilities. So, please let us know about any concerns. Are you satisfied with your PEF division’s spending habits? Is your steward council working efficiently on behalf of your members? Have you observed areas of waste within PEF that you want to see addressed? What can you share with us to help us do our job better? • We have a strong working relationship

with each other that allows each of us to use our individual strength’s to do our job efficiently. If you have information, requests or

concerns you want to share with us, please email us individually at rbrown@pef.org, kjohnson@pef.org, and mkellman@pef.org.
