RETIREES IN ACTION

A message from PEF Retirees President Jim Carr 545 people have power over 317M in U.S.

It is tantalizing to wonder, as Ben

Bernanke did before stepping down at the end of January as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank, how much better the economy would be today, and how many more millions of Americans would have jobs, if Congress hadn’t done so much to drag down growth. Last year, a friend and

CARR

fellow senior sent me a column written by Charley Reese for the Orlando Sentinel. Titled “545 vs 300 million people,” it’s a short, but good, read. He points out 100 senators, 435 U.S.

representatives, one president, and nine U.S. Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of more than 317 million who are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the problems that plague our country. Reese asks: “Have you ever wondered if both Democrats and Republicans are

against deficits? Why do we have deficits? You and I don’t propose the federal budget; the president does. And we don’t have the constitutional authority to vote on appropriations; the House of Representatives does. You and I don’t write tax code or set fiscal policy, Congress writes the tax code, and the Federal Reserve Bank controls monetary policy.” These 545 people alone are responsible

and have the power we gave them with our votes. We, the voters, are their bosses and we can hold them accountable, but only if we vote! As I read this column I thought about

how retirees may disagree on certain subjects, belong to different political parties or subscribe to varying viewpoints and ideologies. However, as seniors dependent on our

pensions, the NYS Health Insurance Program, Social Security and Medicare, we have a mutual stake in maintaining the social safety net for seniors that includes our earned benefits. The people we elect affect every part of

our lives, the roads and bridges on which we travel, the water we drink, the air we breath, our children’s and grandchildren’s ability to find a well paying job, and the quality of our retirements. I urge every one of you to vote. If you

are not registered, do so, and start voting in 2014. Voting matters! As Helen Keller once said, “Alone we

can do so little; together we can do so much.”
