to them? As Facebook turns 10 years old this month, we take a look at why Facebook is not just for the youngsters and how it can be relevant to people of all ages. What is Facebook? Facebook is a “social networking” site. In a nutshell, you can create a circle of “friends” and organisations and see the information that they “post” online. many people think that if they join Facebook, they are dropped into a dark online world full of thousands of people. In reality, when you create a Facebook account, it’s a blank sheet of paper and then you choose the friends and organisations that you want to receive information from. Choose your Circle of “Friends” Once you have a Facebook account, you can invite children, grandchildren, friends and organisations to become “friends” with you. When they post information – maybe a picture or an information update, you see it on your Facebook page. It’s a good way to stay in touch with friends and family wherever they are in the world. Well done dartmouth Police! Facebook also has another important use - it’s a way for organisations to communicate valuable information to you. A great example is how Dartmouth Police used


Why Facebook Can Be a Good Thing! Facebook throughout the recent storms - they posted invaluable updates to all their Facebook subscribers. We could see the status of the ferries for example. On the morning after one of the big storms, they posted the status of the roads – where there were trees down and later updated the information when the roads were open again. A Community Resource There are a number of local organisations that you might want to


“like” on Facebook. e.g Dartmouth News keep us updated on local news and events. Dartmouth Regatta and the Music and Food Festivals deliver information on their events. And of course, you can keep up with all the news from By the Dart! Free Guide to Facebook! Facebook is what you make of it. It often gets negative press but used properly, it’s a great way to receive the information you want and to keep in touch with friends and family.
