DARTMOUTH ROCK Fri 4th

Formed just under a year ago, Dartmouth’s very own a cappella pop/rock choir makes its official debut at the Flavel Arts Centre. singing in rich four, five and occasionally six part harmony, the 40+ members of the choir will perform some of the best known songs from the past six decades, including hits by Abba, the Beatles, Adele and snow patrol. They will also be joined by special guests pretty noisy, the a cappella quartet/quintet lead by Vicky Hadland, who will be well known to Dart Music Festival attendees for her wonderful singing workshops. It was ‘standing room only’ in st Clement’s Church in December for the choir’s informal end-of-term performance, so book early for their official debut concert to avoid disappointment!
DYLAN THOMAS Sat 12th

ClOWn In THe MOOn celebrates 100 years (1914 - 2014) of the life and work and Dylan Thomas and is the title of a poem he wrote aged 14. It is a dramatic portrait of the poet’s chaotic, frequently hilarious,and all too brief life. located in a BBC studio, it sets some of Dylan’s famous broadcasts and iconic works alongside vivid reminiscences of his clownish antics in pubs, bars and parties and his encounters with a host of eccentric and volatile women. This solo show is directed by the award-winning director and actor Gareth Armstrong, is written by award-winning writer Gwynne edwards. Rhodri Miles (Holby City, Torchwood, Richard II, eastern promises, Game of Thrones, Hinterland) plays Dylan Thomas.

Rising star Gabrielle brings her special blend of Gallic charm and sophistication performing parisian-style Jazz and Tango. From pop Idol to piaf... Technically gifted and artistically at home in styles ranging from contemporary jazz to French popular song, this vocalist who, in 2003, reached the final of French “pop Idol” and then studied jazz at the Guildhall, is now performing with her own quintet, major london big bands and top orchestras in addition to touring and television appearances. Her band, including some of europe’s finest musicians in an authentic line-up with accordion, violin and guitar, provides the perfect anchor for her superlative vocals.

Following his delightful full-length ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Christopher Wheeldon continues his highly successful collaboration with designer Bob Crowley and composer Joby Talbot to create his first ballet based on a shakespeare play, the late romance The Winter’s Tale.
FOLK AT THE FLAVEL – MARTIN SIMPSON Thurs 10th

Widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world. Whether playing blues, Dylan or his own compositions, he is a guitarist of immense subtlety and his interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling. Martin has been nominated an astounding 29 times in the eleven years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and has been nominated 11 times as Musician of year which he has won twice. His career has included collaborations with June Tabor, Jackson Browne, Martin Carthy, Cara Dillon, steve Miller and many more. Described by The Guardian as “One of the virtuoso instrumentalists of the english music scene”, Martin is celebrating 35 years as a professional musician and recently released his new album “Vagrant stanzas” to wide critical acclaim. An evening in the company of one the best guitarists around is not to be missed.
