AROUND KINGSWEAR

celebration first birthday lunch which was very much enjoyed by everyone followed by a magnificent birthday cake made and decorated by Virginia Stevens. We continue to seek out relevant information on ever changing health and care services to share with members and are working on gathering a pool of useful contacts and resources. Above all we want to offer an opportunity for friendship and time to chat with people you otherwise fleetingly pass in the village, or perhaps have never even met. Do come and join us from 2pm - 4pm on the first monday of

every month in the Lower Hall. If you need transport or know of someone else who does, please contact Anne Leask on 752251 beforehand. We shall look forward to seeing you.

WILD WIND We’ve certainly had our share of tempestuous weather: winds to

blow over mature trees, enough rain to make Noah’s flood look like a passing shower and river conditions so bad that the ferries have had to be taken off several times. This is a pretty rare event. I do think some thanks are due to

the various marinas around the place and the DHNA people for their attentions to people’s boat moorings, warnings to those at risk and generally doing their job well in extreme conditions. There was amazingly little damage on the river, as far as I know, and that is impressive.

just brought back from India while they are still.....erm....well.... spicey! Any Kingswomen ladies wanting to attend that evening (£15 and bring your own wine) should contact Jan Trevorrow by ‘phone, 752928, or by email: jan_cattell@yahoo.co.uk

PARISH COUNCIL MATTERS Much consideration has been given recently in council to the

cemetery. Firstly there has been need to move fallen trees after the recent winds, secondly there is need to cut back hedges which have grown too far up and out, thirdly there is a plan to improve the circulation of vehicles within the entrance/parking area. This will involve removing one small triangular bed and ‘shaving-back’ a couple of areas a little to enable vehicles to turn more easily. The aim is to make the area safer for modern day usage whilst trying not to change the feel and character of it too much.

As part of this improvement the entrance has been re-tarred and a new road sign has been put up warning people not to turn right as they exit the cemetery. Some drivers have been doing this – illegally – because they were too lazy to enter the one-way system. Very recently there was a near fatal incident when a foolish and selfish driver drove the wrong way in to the path of another car coming quite innocently down Slappers’ Hill. Luckily the legal driver was only travelling fairly slowly, but had they been doing more speed the collision would have been dreadful. It is intended to make the other entrance for pedestrians only. The council has decided to keep the price of grave plots at the same rate of charge this year, so if you want a bargain........... spaces are still available. The council is now considering the Kingswear Award again

for a new recipient so if you have anyone in the village who you would like to nominate please get in touch with any of your councillors. The award is given to a person (occasionally two) who has contributed much to the village in terms of effort on behalf of others generally in our community. The parish clerk’s number is 01803 392265 – that’s Emma Illingworth. Finally on council matters there are a few bank-side moorings

However not everyone on land fared quite as well; there were

several trees blown over, some blocking roads and there again the appropriate authorities had the roads cleared in commend- ably quick time. One tree on Castle Road fell on to the roof of a house there. Happily it seems that the damage caused was fairly superficial, the branches falling astride a roof-light window, but the tree was falling no further than the roof and had to be cut-up and removed.

KINGSWOMEN The Kingswomen ladies have started off the newish year by

enjoying a wine and nibbles evening, sorry, I am corrected a ‘Pre- Valentine’s-Eve Chocolate Fest.’ A good time was had by all and arrangements were put in place for a games evening to be held at the Trust Room at the usual 7:30 pm starting time on 13th march, not to mention another super ‘manna from Devon’ evening on Tuesday 29th April which will be all about Indian cooking. It will be great to cook with David and Holly’s spices which they have

left for this year in the creek so if you are looking to moor your boat please get in touch with either Emma (number above) or me, 01803 752928. As soon as the weather allows we are going to have a new moorings-marking session down in the creek, so if you see us down there bring alcohol and sandwiches and come to watch or join us.
