Would it help to talk to someone?

amaritans need your help to make a real difference to others. If you are 18 or over and able to give 3 or 4 hours a week plus some time in the night every few weeks, then consider becoming a volunteer by writing for an application form to your nearest branch.

S

Samaritan volunteers are ordinary people, just like you and me. We come from all walks of life, all backgrounds and cultures but we do have one thing in common - we are all good listeners. Listening is something most people take for granted, but for Samaritans, listening is really important. At the Leeds branch, we need people who can take the time to listen and provide confidential emotional support for those going through difficult times, who are in despair, feeling suicidal or have no- one else to turn to. There are approximately 100 Samaritan volunteers at our branch, but during the past 12 months we received about 15,000 contacts by telephone, e-mail and meetings face to face!

Do you think you would be interested, and able to help us with our work?

What Skills do you need to be a volunteer?

Experience or qualifications are not essential to become a Samaritan, but you do need to be openminded and non-judgmental.

Small Steps 30

We will provide you with the training you need to carry out your role. This involves meeting on one evening a week for seven consecutive weeks and covers aspects such as the kind of emotional experiences you may encounter and answering messages by email.

Joining Samaritans is not all about giving. You will have the opportunity to gain greater self-awareness, personal growth, new life and career skills and make more friends as a result of helping others.

As a volunteer, you’ll find that we are a warm and welcoming group of people of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds. There are also opportunities to meet volunteers from other branches at the regional and national Samaritans’ conferences.
