G

lobal demand for wood and wood- related products is increasing, driven

by increases in population and standards of living, as well as a need for renewable energy resources to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

“Legislation in Europe states that 20% of all energy consumed within the Continent should come from renewable sources by 2020,” stated Andreas Larendius, who holds the position of Global Industry Director for Forestry Logistics at Scania.

“We see similar interest in reducing fossil fuel dependency and carbon dioxide emissions in other parts of the world.” Due to their abundant forests, Larendius is investigating Scandinavia, Russia and Latin America as potential markets. “In addition to planning four new pulp mills, Brazil is increasing the capacity of its existing mills and the energy sector is

booming there,” he said. “There are new pulp mills in Uruguay and the forest industry in Chile is also growing. This increased production capacity will require transport.”

Uptime demand Scania’s forestry specialists are analysing customer needs and initiating the development of new products that will appeal to these

markets. “Running trucks 24 hours a day in diffi cult conditions puts an even greater demand on us for uptime,” confi rmed Larendius. “Our service operations need to be on their toes to create value for the customers and to realise the full service sales potential for Scania. Financing is another important factor, together with good fuel consumption, second- hand value and vehicle service
