T

he European Biomass Association is proud to publish the fi fth edition of its annual

statistical report ‘European Bioenergy Outlook’. The report was published at the beginning of December, 2013, and is now available free of charge on the AEBIOM website. In the fi rst three weeks, 1,200 persons downloaded the report.

The complexity of the bioenergy sector makes it diffi cult to have a clear overview about the situation of the sector and future potential. A wide variety of biomass raw materials and conversion technologies, the fi nal energy use, the question of European

legislation affecting the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) sector, the competition for raw material and the development of related sectors are only a few examples of how complex the bioenergy sector is. The information related to all these issues is scattered around different sources and sometimes the fi gures are not even consistent. This is why AEBIOM decided to publish this collection of data on biomass in order to contribute to a better understanding and further successful development of the bioenergy sector in Europe. Besides the general overview of RES and the bioenergy situation in Europe, the report consists of two main parts. The fi rst part provides basic information about the biomass resources originating from forest, agricultural and waste streams. The second part is structured according to its end use: electricity, heat and transport. One more special chapter, more extensive than in previous editions, is dedicated to the pellet sector. These pellets statistics have been collected by the European Pellet Council (EPC) and the European Industry of Pellet Suppliers (EIPS), both founded by AEBIOM. So far, the statistical report has had a tremendous amount of success with around 3,000 downloads per year. AEBIOM expects this success to increase

in future editions.

The preparation of the European Bioenergy Outlook 2013 was co-ordinated by Cristina Calderón, AEBIOM Bioenergy

Expert, with the technical assistance of Jean-Marc Jossart, AEBIOM Secretary General, and Gilles Gauthier, General Manager of the European Pellet Council.

Explanation from previous issue

In the article headed ‘Wood pellets – a booming sector!’ published in the AEBIOM pages of the previous issue of Forest Bioenergy Review, three reference numbers were missing from the copy.

In 2010 (1), just 1 million tonnes of pellets were traded in the European Union compared to 19 million tonnes by the end of 2012! Worldwide (2), there are now 760 pellet production plants with a total capacity of 42 million tonnes. Europe is

consuming around 80% of the pellets produced worldwide. It is possible to identify three different market orientations (3): power-oriented market, heating-oriented market and mix-oriented market. These numbers referred to the source of the information as follows:

1. IEA Bioenergy, Task 40, Large industrial users of biomass 2. Argus

3. Biofpr, Wood pellet market and trade: a global perspective
