DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY WILD SPRING FESTIVAL 5 April-5 May 2014 Various Venues The 2014 Dumfries and Galloway Wild Spring Festival features more than 70 wildlife events, many free and most hosted by local wildlife guides. Set amidst beautiful unspoilt country- side, the festival is perfect for families and wildlife fans alike to discover this most surprising and naturally inspiring part of Scotland. From frogs and fishtails to badgers and buzzards, Dumfries and Galloway is teeming with wildlife in Spring. Events take place in the great outdoors at Dumfries & Galloway’s many woodlands, nature reserves, lochs and gardens. These include the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust’s Caerlaverock Wetlands Centre, and the RSPB’s Mersehead Reserve. At the heart of the 2013 Wild Spring Festival is the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, an area of fantastic landscapes and wildlife covering over 52,000 square km of Galloway and South- ern Ayrshire countryside.


WORLD CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS SENIORS AND MIXED DOUBLES 23-30 April 2014 As part of the Year of Homecoming, Dumfries & Galloway Council will be hosting the World Curling Championships in senior and mixed doubles in the region for the first time. The event will attract teams from across the world to the area which is steeped in the tradition of curling and has produced many of the top players from the sport since curling’s concep- tion in 1541. NEWTON STEWART WALKING FESTIVAL 9-15 May 2014 Various venues A week of guided walks and evening talks exploring the wild hills, rugged coastline, rolling countryside and attractive towns and villages of Galloway. The most strenuous walks deep into the Galloway hills are led by members of Galloway Mountain Rescue Team while there is a range of themed walks led by local experts in areas such as wildlife, flora and fauna, history and geology. www.newtonstewartwalkfest.co.uk


DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY ARTS FESTIVAL 16-25 May 2014 The region’s longest-running arts festival and Scotland’s largest rural multi-arts festival, the festival delivers a vibrant programme of good quality contemporary theatre, a strong classi- cal music programme, with a mix of dynamic folk music. The programme includes artists from around Scotland and further afield, to sit alongside some of the region’s internationally renowned artists and developing artists. www.dgartsfestival.org.uk


KNOCKENGORROCH WORLD CEILIDH FESTIVAL 22-25 May 2014 Now in its 17th year, Knockengorroch World Ceilidh is the seminal outdoor roots music festi- val in Scotland. Located deep in the Galloway hills in the Southern Uplands on Knockengor- roch farm, the festival is family friendly and welcomes all ages. Unlimited by genre, the musical line-up is a melting pot of world, folk and fusion music with dub reggae, electronica, hip-hop, drum n bass and more stirred in for good measure. Last year headline acts included international acts who had travelled as far as Louisiana and Ethiopia, alongside Scottish favourites. As well as music, cabaret, spoken word, comedy and dance all take place across five venues, from the open air stage, custom built from locally sourced timber and turf roofed, to tented structures large and small, to the Celtic Longhouse venue, a willow wattled lovingly recreated iron age dwelling.
