Leisure centre parking limits
PARKING controls are to be estab- lished at Maidstone Leisure Centre. Maidstone Leisure Trust is intro-
ducing an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system to prevent commuters parking all day, free of charge. From the end of February ve- hicles parked for longer than three hourswill be fined £75. Sixth formers at Maidstone Grammar School will be given permits to leave their cars at the centre all
day.Users of the leisure cen- tre and the bowls club will be able to register their cars on a console on the site and park for free over and above that period. Jon Hymus, partnership manager
for the trust, said the measure would mean more parking for leisure centre users. He added it would control po- tential “vehicular anti-social behav- iour”, improve car park security with theANPR system monitoring and in- troduce controls to deal with abuses of disabled parking and school bus bays.
Garage plan blocked
KELLY Barnett’s application for a de- tached double garage with store at 28 Spot Lane, Bearsted has been refused. Maidstone Council’s decision notice
said the development, which in- cluded alterations to driveway, bank and wall, would be “overly promi- nent” and cause harm to the layout and appearance of the streetscene.
Demand for bypass aer road collapses
DISRUPTION caused by the ongoing closure of the main road through Leeds has re-ignited the call for a bypass in the south-east of Maidstone.
Leeds ParishCouncil is taking steps
to appoint a private roads consultant to investigate whether EU money might be found for a bypass or, fail- ing that, to lead a charge to get the road declassified – effectively ban- ning lorries from the village. It follows weeks of disruption and
diversions for villagers and the 5,700 vehicles that use the popular cut- through daily, which has a 17 tonne weight restriction. Talk of a new south-east link road – between the A274 near Langley and M20 Junction 8 near Hollingbourne – has been put on hold over a lack of funding. Parish council chairman Gill Fort,
who has lived on the busy B2163 for 12 years, said: “The recent road col- lapse has brought the overweight lorry issue to a head. “KCC say budget cuts mean a by-
pass is now a distant hope, but if EU funding is available,we need to look into it. “The police don’t turn up to our meetings and take no action against
sive undertaking then a referendum might be necessary, as this would mean putting the precept up. “Most residents in Leeds believe
traffic is still the biggest issue in the village and as long as the B2163 re- mains a B road, there is little morewe can do to stop the overweight lorries and speeding cars.” Downgrading the road to a C, or getting it declassified, would allow traffic-calming measures to be intro- duced, deterring drivers of heavy lor- ries who ignore theweight limit. KCC, which has stabilised the road,
Trevor Williams was unable to get to his home in The Milners by car
hauliers breaking the law when pro- vided with evidence by us, so the weight restriction has become unen- forceable.” Cllr Fort said quotes were now
being invited to see how much the campaign might cost. She said: “If it proves to be a mas-
has been told structural work will need to be carried out to two proper- ties near the Ten Bells pub before the under-road utilities network can be permanently repaired and the road resurfaced. It anticipates the road will not re-open before the middle of Jan- uary. The problem started after repairs to
a water leak uncovered huge “wash- out” holes under the road. The road was closed on November 9.
