News Cricket delay

LAWYERS have been accused of dragging their heels over the lease and licence that allows Bearsted Cricket Club to play cricket on the Green. Talks have been going on for almost

two years to get a suitable agreement in place and a draft documentwas ap- proved in February last year. Bearsted Parish Council, which re-

cently paid £900 to a local law firm, was told by the cricket club’s Steve Pearce the paperwork had still not been finalised. Parish council chairman Richard

Ash said: “I have told them I want them to get on with it, but they seem to create problems where there are no problems.” Cllr Geoff Licence said: “It seems to

me that our lawyers are not acting in our best interests. I think we should refuse to pay them.”

Race on to fund repair of ancient church

FRIENDS and supporters of the historic church in Ulcombe are frantically raising money to carry outwork on the ancient building.

A routine inspection found the medieval church, situated outside the village on Ulcombe Hill, was in need of major urgent repairs. Sections of the roof need to be re-

placed and internal repairs are needed to the fabric of the building which has sufferedwater damage. Repairs are estimated at £80,000

and parishioners would like to see the church kitchen and toilets im- proved at the same time. English Heritage has pledged £40,000 towards the restoration work, while local charities have of- fered a further £22,500. The Friends of All Saints’ Church have organised a programme of

fund-raising events, including an auction of promises, which has so far raised more than £5,000. All Saints’ Church dates back to

the 12th century and is a grade I listed building. It underwent major restoration in the 1980s. The church- yard contains ancient yewtrees, one of which is over 2,000 years old.

Historic abbey may host events

PART of the historic BoxleyAbbey may become a venue for weddings and functions. James Best-Shaw has applied to bring the eastern part of

the grade I listed barn, whichwas a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century by William Ypres, Earl of Kent, into an entertainment spot that could hold up to two events perweek. The abbey, a scheduled ancient monument, is in Boarley

Lane, Sandling, close to the M20. “The interior remains in remarkable condition,” said Mr Best-Shaw in his supporting statement. “The motorway severely compromises the environment and renders many uses unviable. The use we have applied for may be suc-

cessful given the background noise generated by a party should reduce the impact of the motorway roar.” Mr Best-Shaw admits that hosting events with live

music may provoke local concerns. He added: “We will likely be subject to limitations on operating hours, fre- quency of events and permitted levels of sound.” Maidstone Council will determine the application.
