you say all day long? What do you say when you cut off a piece? Find some new inspiring teaching language and give yourself some gentle reminders or not so gentle, to encourage you to CHANGE. You could put a sticky note on your stand OR, depending on the age level you teach and your teaching environment, it might be ok to get some student feedback on this. Are you an “um-er,” “folks,” “ladies and gentlemen,” “good work, today” ? What teaching language is programmed in your brain from years of teaching and habit? Could you change a predictable line or two? Words are powerful, what can you add to your teaching vocabulary and make a HABIT (um, by practicing it, but I won’t make you turn in prac- tice sheets).
As I continually challenge myself to take care of myself; engage with colleagues and administrators; “toot my own horn” with administrators and continue to revitalize my teaching with individual teaching challenges, so I challenge you. Game on! My fellow MMEA board members are work- ing up a professional storm here. Thanks to all who have actively participated in the MMEA membership drive. In ad- dition, I am so proud of all of the professional development offerings and engagement of our members. Thanks for all
that you do for music education in Michigan. Brava! Bravo!
As I head towards the end of my presidency, I might wax a bit poetic or get a bit nostalgic. Please bear with me. Words might fail me, but I hope to inspire you to be the very best you every day for all of the individuals in your large groups, as you all inspire me every day with your great ACTs of teaching and volunteer time. It is a true honor to serve you, my fellow music teachers, and the music students of Michi- gan. I celebrate all the ACTs that you do every day to fill the world with wonderful music, strong musical student minds, gently-educated administrators, and life-long independent musicians that want to also contribute to their community (because of your inspired model).
So, my multi-tasking music teacher friends, what ACTs are you up to lately?
Go Team MMEA!
