MMEA ANNOUNCES 2013 AWARD RECIPIENTS
The Michigan Music Education Association (MMEA) is pleased to announce our 2013 Award Recipients. Diane Schrems has been named the 2013 MMEA Music Educator of the Year, and Shirley Lemon has received the 2013 MMEA Award of Merit. Both awards will be presented at the MMEA Breakfast/Annual Meeting, to be held at the Michigan Music Conference on Saturday, January 18th, 2014 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Diane Schrems, recipient of the 2013 MMEA Music Educator of the Year award, has taught K-6 general music in the Jenison Public Schools for 22 years. In addition, Diane directs a 5th/6th grade choir, her district’s elementary honors choir and co-directs the Jenison High School musical. Diane has presented at the Michigan Music Conference, university general music workshops and the MMEA Fall Workshop. Diane is very proud of her history in mentoring beginning teachers. She regularly mentors student teachers and considers it a privilege to mold young music educators. She has been recognized by the Jenison School Board with an award for excellence in music education, and served previously on the board of directors for MMEA. Diane’s dedication to music education and her students is unmatched. We congratulate her on receiving this prestigious award!
Shirley Lemon, recipient of the 2013 MMEA Award of Merit, taught vocal music for 35 years, 33 of those in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools. She is in her first year of “retirement” and has just completed a semester of interim teaching at Hope College, where she has also taught secondary choral methods in the past. Shirley received the Grand Haven Excellence in Service Award in 1990, and the MSVMA Vocal Music Teacher of the Year award in 1995. She has served on the boards of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) and the American Choral Directors Association of Michigan (ACDA), and has conducted numerous honors ensembles throughout Michigan. Shirley is a consummate music educator, and we congratulate her on receiving this fantastic award!
