we discuss issues of diversity in the context of education, the more we remove ‘other’ status from students in minor- ity populations. Sharing stories, research, and strategies can help teacher educators, in-service teachers, and pre- service teachers activate an honest dialogue that will further remove the veil of secrecy about LGBT issues in music education.

The purpose of this literature review is to distinguish pia- nist roles of accompanying, collaborating, vocal coaching,
and ensemble piano transcription or reduction for vocalists and instrumentalists. Though the term collaborative pianist has been used for half a century, it is used as a fanciful rather than functional alternative to the term accompanist. While accompanying provides musical support for soloists, collaborative pianists play a role in helping solve problems alongside musicians and conductors. Vocal coaches play a role of giving advice, both in music, expression, and language. In the fourth role, pianists perform a special type of repertoire called piano transcription, which means the materials in those piano pieces transferred, re-arranged, and borrowed from ensemble compositions, most commonly that of an orchestra. These roles associate with distinct ca- reer paths that pianists might pursue, and suggests avenues for helping pianists become successful in each of these roles. Additional implications for professional, pedagogical, and educational situations are provided.
