MICHIGAN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PERFORM WITH THE 2013 NAFME ALL-NATIONAL HONORS ENSEMBLES

AT THE GAYLORD OPRYLAND HOTEL IN NASHVILLE Jacob Fulkerson, a senior at Bedford High School, and Sarah Hodg- man, a junior at Tecumseh High School were selected as members of the 2013 NAfME All-National Honor Ensembles sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The Na- tional Association for Music Education, among the world’s larg- est arts education organizations, advocates at the local, state, and national levels; provides resources for teachers, parents, and ad- ministrators; hosts professional development events; and offers a variety of opportunities for students and teachers. The Association orchestrates success for millions of students nationwide and has supported music educators at all teaching levels for more than a century.

Representing the state of Michigan, Jacob and Sarah joined more than 670 of the most musically accomplished high school students in the United States and performed at a gala concert on October 30, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee. Both Jacob and Sarah became eligible to compete against top students for a spot in these na- tional honor ensembles by participating in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Honor Ensembles last May. Jacob made it to the Michigan Youth Arts Festival by receiving the highest score at his Michigan School Band and Orchestra (MSBOA) District and State Solo and Ensemble auditions. Sarah’s route to the Michigan Arts Festival included Regional and Michigan Music Conference auditions through the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA).

Jacob participated as a member of the National Honor Band con- ducted by Dr. Peter Boonshaft from Hofstra University in New York. The band consisted of 150 instrumentalists from all over the country. This was Jacob’s second year performing with the National Honor Band as he performed at the Kennedy Center with the 2012 National Honor Band last year. Jacob performs with the Bedford High School Symphonic Band conducted by Mr. Cory Meggitt. For the last three years, he has been a member of the Michigan Youth Ensembles Orchestra and Band under the direc- tion of Professor Anthony Elliot and Professor Rodney Dorsey. He is a member of the Toledo Youth Orchestra and Detroit Civic Youth Wind Ensemble both conducted by Dr. Ken Thompson, Bowling Green State University. Also he is a member of the De- troit Civic Youth Orchestra directed by Mr. Charles Burke, Artis- tic Director of the Detroit Civic Youth Ensembles. Jacob studies with David Saltzman, principal tuba of the Toledo Symphony Or- chestra. He is planning on majoring in music performance. He is the son of Kevin and Laurie Fulkerson of Temperance.
