THIS FORMER POLICE OFFICER traded in his badge to do some
time... behind the bar at Flicks in Hillcrest. Now in his third year, this New Jersey native has seen the local watering hole go through many chang- es. In the last year, as a part of that transformation, Christopher has seen new ownership, complimented by a new look and new nightly special events, turning Flicks once again into a thriving Hillcrest hotspot.
Is there any difference between gay bars on the West Coast as compared to the East Coast? Yes, gay bars are very different. East Coast gay bars are miles apart and
they are few and far in between. In Southern California and Hillcrest we are all snuggled together. I believe it creates an amazing bond within our community. What do you enjoy during your spare time? I enjoy long walks on the beach, going to the gym, taking off my shirt
and day drinking in Hillcrest. I also enjoy rugged stuff like camping, hik- ing and chopping wood. In just one year, Flicks’ new owner, Jeff Jackson, has really turned the bar around. What would you say is the biggest improvement he has made? The biggest improvement he has made to Flicks is the amazing re- modeling and renewed teamwork. He really made the bar into a comfy spot. We treat the place like our home and the people like our family. Jeff continues to say that all the success the bar has had in 2013 is due to his incredible staff—that’s pretty flattering. He is not only an amazing boss but an even better friend. Jeff treats
all of his staff with respect and also has a lot of fun with his patrons. He is always in a great mood. Flicks now offers a different event every night of the week, which is your favorite? That’s a very tough question; every night at Flicks is incredible now.
If I had to pick my favorite, it would have to be Tuesday’s Karaoke Night. I love watching people sing their hearts out. I also enjoy Sunday NFL football, it’s great watching the excitement of our fans when their teams score. Flicks has always been the best place to come watch NFL football in Hillcrest. Are you planning anything special for Super Bowl Sunday? We will be showing all the playoff games during the weeks leading

up to the Super Bowl. Then on Super Bowl Sunday, we will have free ca- tered food and the liquor will be flowing! We are planning to have drink specials and a raffle with amazing prizes including bar tabs. I see a lot of familiar faces in the bar now during happy hour, how would you describe your regulars? I would describe them as our friends. We know each of them by name
and I know what they like—ahhhhh—to drink. I take care of them and they always take care of me… if you know what I mean. 2013 was a great year for Flicks, what should we be looking for from Flicks in 2014? We will build upon the success that we had in 2013. And now that the bar looks so amazing, it’s time to fix up the restrooms. LOL!
