LGBT SENIOR APARTMENTS ARE ON THE WAY!

by william e. kelly

Sue Reynolds, President of Community Housing Works spoke withThe Rage Monthly, sharing news that much-needed apartments actively supporting LGBT seniors may finally be coming to fruition.

What is Community Housing Works (CHW) and what is the big news? We’re a 33-year-old nationally-recognized non-profit that

develops and manages attractive, affordable apartments to help people and communities move up in the world by providing opportunities to own, rent and achieve. Our non- profit realty and lending services help people to buy and own homes. Our comprehensive programs help residents achieve their own goals for stability, education and financial self-sufficiency. CHW is proposing a North Park mixed-income develop- ment that includes LGBT-affirmative affordable senior

housing at Texas Street and Howard Avenue,

which would include 118

market-rate multifamily homes and 76 affordable apart- ments for seniors. In collaboration with the San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center), the senior apartments will be designed as an affirming and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors. The Center’s Senior Services staff will provide resources welcoming to the entire senior community.

Is CHW solely focused on LGBT housing needs? The organization is broad-based and annually serves 8,000 people of all kinds across San Diego County and beyond. We have a decades-long tradition of LGBT folks in leadership including previous Executive Director Jennifer LeSar, other top staff leaders, two of our longest-serving board chairs and myself.
