Reversing Type 2 Diabetes is a Reality
by Dr. Michael Boss, DC T
ype 2 Diabetes is a devastating disease that touches each of us in some way. It is not a condition that
pops up overnight. It often takes years and even decades to develop full-blown diabetes, but many people are walking around right now with pre-diabetes, or what I call pre-pre-diabetes. Could you be one of them?
Devastation of Enormous
Proportions Natural disasters are horrible tragedies. In 2012, reports indicate that 349 Americans lost their lives in natural disasters, and these events cost more than $140 billion nationwide. But there is another national tragedy that occurs daily in the U.S. and gets very little coverage. Nearly 26 million
people in the United States have been diagnosed with Diabetes – that’s almost 1 in 10 Americans. Most of these people are Type 2 diabetics, and deaths each year directly attributed to Diabetes total more than 100,000. Here’s perhaps the most important
fact: The vast majority of these cases are both preventable and reversible.
What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a metabolism disorder, the result of too much glucose (blood sugar) in the blood. The excess of glucose occurs when the patient’s metabolism cannot functionally handle the demand necessary to process or use it correctly. Glucose is one of the body’s main sources of energy production. When you ingest carbohydrates, you
break them down into glucose. The goal of glucose metabolism is to get that glucose into the cells of the muscle and liver and turn it into glycogen (stored energy). Glycogen is then used by the cells to fuel your body. Diabetes occurs when this metabolic process goes awry and does not function properly. It doesn’t happen overnight. These faulty processes go on for extended periods of time and go through “phases” prior to becoming a full-blown Type 2 diabetic. Diabetes occurs because the body does not produce enough insulin, produces no insulin, or has cells that do not respond properly to the insulin (termed insulin resistance). Insulin is produced and released by the pancreas. One of these dysfunctions results in too much glucose building up in the blood. Insulin resistance is the most common cause of Type 2 Diabetes in the U.S. Although your blood has plenty of glucose, the cells are not getting it for their essential energy and growth requirements. Another problem is that the body turns the excess glucose into triglycerides and bad cholesterol in the blood and also into body fat. This results in weight gain and makes weight loss difficult unless the right steps are taken. Rising cholesterol and triglycerides is one of the first signs of a blood sugar metabolism issue.
Common Misconceptions There are many misconceptions and untruths that are perpetuated and believed by the masses concerning Diabetes and its treatment. No. 1 – Once you have Diabetes,
you can’t get rid of it. On the contrary, Type 2 Diabetes is reversible. It is a problem of faulty metabolism that is usually driven by the individual’s
