Don’t Let Pain Derail Your Health and Fitness Resolutions by Dr. Jason Garrett, DC ACP
A
new year brings new resolutions, which are typically geared toward
improving health and fitness. It’s important to remember that pushing too hard can increase the potential for injury. Before diving into a new routine, take time to listen to your body and slowly build up stamina and strength to start the new year well, not fast. Cold weather months have
a tendency to bring an increase in chronic pain, especially back pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 50,000 people sustain some type of winter-related back injury during the colder holiday months. Stress also contributes to back pain (and chronic pain in general), which can throw a pretty big roadblock into your 2014 health and fitness resolutions.
Chronic pain, while common,
does not have to become part of your daily life, much less an obstacle to meeting new fitness goals. People living with chronic pain often fear their only options may be medicinal or surgical in nature; however, there are other options. Fortunately there are wonderful health and wellness centers in the San Antonio area that help people suffering from chronic pain by providing timely relief and lasting results that get active people back on track to live an active, pain-free life. It has been the focus of my career, and I’m fortunate to be affiliated with many wonderful providers who are similarly focused on delivering relief and healing. It’s hard to imagine suffering from
chronic pain and resisting treatment, but I see it all too often. Busy adults resist treatment of pain, both ordinary and chronic, because they fear extensive recovery downtime. Ignoring pain and
old injuries isn’t the best option, and many resolutions are cut short by this approach. To avoid abandoning a resolution,
listen to your body to identify pain and start a new program or exercise program “well” instead of fast. In my practice, I focus on non-surgical treatments that offer an effective, affordable alternative to surgical procedures. My primary message is not to “market” my practice, but instead to encourage you to explore all options. There are many fine providers who offer alternative, non-surgical options and who work diligently with each patient to get to the root source of his or her pain. Make 2014 your best year yet by
starting slow, starting well, listening to your body and addressing any potential aches and pains that emerge.
