they effectively sell their services on an as needed basis. So whether it’s a `number of virtual
servers’ for an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) provider, or a ‘number of users’ for a software as a service (SaaS) provider – the customer has the option to consume more or less service on an hourly basis. The disconnect here is that the cloud
provider is selling on an hourly up/ down variable basis - yet having to contract for data centre colocation on a three/five/ten year basis. If you’re reading this and thinking
`that doesn’t make sense’ - then you’re absolutely right. At Virtus we concluded earlier this year that the old approach didn’t make
sense for cloud start-ups and indeed for many smaller cloud service providers. And with our CoLo-on-Demand
product we’ve now proved that colocation can also become an on- demand service in almost the same way as the cloud services themselves. This is a model we think that the
whole of the colocation industry (well, those that want to be part of the cloud- based future) need to adopt. The other element of the business
model that many colocation providers will need to change is from being property providers - effectively just supplying the facility) to becoming business enablers. They need to provide an ecosystem for both technical and commercial
interaction between their many cloud customers. The opportunities for all of these
cloud providers to collaborate with each other, leverage each others’ expertise and products to better - and more profitably - service their own customers is immense. Ultimately, Virtus believes that the
value of the ecosystem will be one of the major factors in deciding in which colocation facility a cloud provider will place its servers.

Another Milestone in Fiber Optics
Another year, another world record for OFS.
120 Gb/s transmission over 100 meters on a single multicore strand of optical fiber, a milestone on the road to next-generation 400 Gb/s transmission and beyond. Remarkable? Yes, but not surprising, when you consider who we are and where we come from. Our history dates back to 1876, with a heritage that includes technology powerhouses such as AT&T and Bell Labs, and scores of innovations that make possible today’s networks – and tomorrow’s. It’s no wonder that people come to us when they need reliable, high-performance fiber for their most demanding applications.
