FIRST IMPRESSIONS First Impressions The year in review:

For most of the world, this has been an evolutionary – if not revolutionary year. Good, bad and ugly came out of hiding. Let’s review some of these world events:

February 15 – A meteor explodes over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, injuring 1,491 people and damaging over 4,300 buildings. It is the most powerful meteor to strike Earth’s atmosphere in over a century. The incident, along with a coincidental flyby of a larger asteroid, prompts international concern regarding the vulnerability of the planet to meteor strikes.

February 21 – American scientists use a 3D printer to create a living lab-grown ear from collagen and ani- mal ear cell cultures. In the future, it is hoped, similar ears could be grown to order as transplants for human patients suffering from ear trauma or amputation.

March 5, Hugo Chávez, President of Venezuela died.

April 15 – Two bombs explode at the Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States, killing 3 and injuring 264 others

June 6 – American Edward Snowden discloses operations engaged by a US government mass surveillance program to news publications and flees the country, later being granted temporary asylum in Russia. This stirred a huge backlash against government snooping.

July 16 – Detroit files for bankruptcy (might as well, almost everybody else has.)

November – The US and Iran sit down at the negotiating table – first time in 30 years.

November – Obama Care, The Affordable Health Act hurls itself into a very messy birth amid computer problems, astronomical insurance rates and many left with little or no options for affordable health care. Most major provi- sions are expected to be phased in by January 2014

Those of us who had hoped that 12/21/2012 would herald in a new age of peace, love and prosperity may be a little disillusioned by now. It seems like business as usual on every level. A few scientific breakthroughs are notable, but mostly political power plays, violent weather and terrorism – again!

Friends and colleagues remind me that it’s “growing pains” for our consciousness and for the earth. With that said, let’s hold the earth in the light and think of all the wonderful things, animals, plants and beautiful vistas that are still here for our pleasure. Let’s send love to the earth, the water, the creatures and to each other.

Peace
