Cold Weather, a Pain in the Neck! HEALING ARTS By Li Hua, L. Ac. TCMD.
Thanksgiving day ushers in the holiday season, bring- ing a wintery to welcome Christmas and New Year. The winter weather is one of the most common causes of neck pain. Usually neck pain leads to pain around the head, eyes, ears, cheeks, sinuses, jaws, shoulders, arms, or up the back. Neck pain comes from various factors such as using the wrong pillow, trauma, acci- dent, injury, surgery, bone spurs, aging, degenerative spine disease, health problems, flu, viruses, medica- tions, foods, alcohol, smoking, physical or emotional stress, over or improper use the neck, or imbalances in the environment (home or office). Western medicine may offer pain pills, cortisone injections or surgery. There are many natural methods to help neck pain, too. Traditional Chinese medicine is one of the natural heal- ing methods.
Cold is the main weather characteristic of winter-time. The cold weather can attack the skin, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, nerves, and meridians around the neck causing neck pain. Medical causes of neck pain include: heart attack, high blood pressure or stroke in which neck pain may appear as a symptom prior to the actual medical event. The side effect of some medications is neck pain. Some people may have neck pain after eat- ing too much holiday rich foods and drinking too much. When children do not maintain good posture when they watch TV or are on the computer, play games on electronic devices, read books, or do homework, this may lead to developmental problems of the spine from muscle imbalance and tiredness. Stale indoor air may be full of bacteria and virus since the windows are not opened regularly in the winter-time. Low blood oxygen levels may also result in neck pain. Acupuncture is the best natural way to help removing the neck pain.
To prevent neck pain and other maladies, drink plenty of fluids - especially water. Washing your hands will decrease your likelihood of spreading a virus to your nose, mouth or other people. In addition to washing your hands regularly, cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. If possible, avoid close contact with those who are sick and, if you are sick, avoid close contact with others. Use natural immune-boosters such as garlic, which offers effective protection against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in your body. Stay away from hospitals unless you have an emergency and need expert medical care, because hospitals are prime breeding grounds for infections of all kinds. The best place to get plenty of rest and recover from illness that is not life-threatening is usually in the comfort of your own home.
During the holiday season, be sure not to over eat or drink. Eat more vegetables, such as turnips, squash, carrots, cabbage, and seaweed. The way to cook veg-

Keep material concerns and spiritual mat- ters in balance and harmony. Boil vinegar water in the bedrooms once a week to clean the air naturally.
