At the end of Septem-

ber I attended the Labour Party Conference in Brighton. Conference

is always an excellent opportunity to meet

with various charities and organisations who have stalls in the conference centre.

Guide Dogs UK was a highlight for me. Their “Street Clutter Challenge” was great fun – I had to putt around street clutter on the Guide Dogs’ mini golf course to raise

awareness of their campaign on keeping streets free from clutter. Street clutter is dangerous and disorientating for

blind and partially sighted people – a recent Guide Dogs sur- vey found 97% of visually impaired respondents reported finding it a problem on a daily or weekly basis, 57% had suffered an injury from street clutter and 9% had to re- ceive medical treatment.

You can find out more about the campaign by visiting Guide Dogs UK website here -

A fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. I think that is something most people would agree on. We know that too many parents are having to work two jobs just to make ends meet and so have no time to spend with their children. As well as proper enforcement of the National Minimum Wage (NMW), Government should look to pro- mote the Living Wage. There are now over 400 accredited Living

Wage Employers across the UK. We have seen the first ever Living Wage Olympics and the campaign has put £200 million into the pockets of 45,000 low paid workers. I met with campaigners from the Citizens UK

Living Wage campaign, who have put together pro- posals for government. These proposals are the result of Citizen UK’s extensive consultation with employers, and with the member communities of Citizens UK. This is not about the heavy hand of Government but about enabling all of us to make choices about how we spend our money. As my introduction to

Labour have set out additional plans to encourage businesses to take up the living wage. You can read the recommendations here -
