Healing for Hayley Benefit September 28. 2013 The Cellar Club Spartanburg, SC

If there’s one thing Southern musi-

cians are good at, it’s donating their tal- ent to help others in need. I have seen it first hand, many times, not only as an or- ganizer of events, but as the recipient and as a performer myself. My friend Tim Shook organized a group of people called The Angel Light Network with the spe- cific goal of helping needful families in the Upstate of South Carolina, such as the family of Hayley Martini, a 14-year- old who has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The Satur- day afternoon concert raised some much needed cash to help the family with mounting expenses. I will say right off the bat that I really

liked the time and length of this show. It was not an all day long marathon like many of the events around here tend to be. It was more concentrated, beginning at 3 in the afternoon and wrapping up a little after 8 pm. Also of note, the back line pro- vided by Jim Summer and Big Blue Planet eliminated the need for a lot of set changes, and the time between bands was virtually non-existent. It was music, music and more music. When we arrived, the music was already

underway. Another last minute act had been added to the roster, Three Guys and a Guitar, and the guys sounded good from what little I heard. Good vocals and harmonies. Alling band rocked the house as well, and Marti B & Them Dang Kids sounded as good

as ever, led by local favorite Marti Bielmeyer, a lady with a powerful voice and a great piano style. I think my favorite cover tune they played was “Baby Love” by Mother’s Finest. It had everybody groovin.’ Of course, Marti is an excellent songwriter as well, as evidenced by her performance of “Woman in Love.” Rickey Godfrey is nothing short of an Up-

state legend. Many of us recall his work with the band Garfeel Ruff, a group that signed to Capital Records and recorded a pair of really nice albums. Rickey is a guitar monster, and vocally, he is one of my favorites. The man can growl the blues, sing you some hot but- tered soul, or throw down on a plate full of
