Oil” to the blues of “Running Water,” with Walter Trout on guitar. One of the best records of 2013...It’s a Beautiful Day were one of the staples of the Bay Area scene in late ‘60’s San Francisco, and this double-disc package Live at The Fillmore ‘68 stands as a testament to why they were so loved. The CD was recorded live at The Fillmore West in 1968, and the bonus DVD features clips, in- terviews and much more that span the group’s careers from the beginning until now, with footage of them playing together today. The band’s loose, Jefferson Airplane-style sound truly evokes memories of the summer of love and that whole time period. In a word, “psychedelic.”... Leslie West is still rockin’ just as hard as he did way back in 1969 when he fronted the phenomenal Mountain. At 68, he still plays that guitar like a mother (shut your mouth!) -just talkin’ ‘bout Leslie. Having survived cancer, years of drug addiction, im- mense weight issues, smoking, and most re- cently a medical emergency that cost him his leg, (a forced amputation to save his life from the infection), he is most assuredly Still Climbing. The new record comes out of the corner swinging hard with “Dyin’ Since The Day I Was Born,” and keeps punching for a solid 11 rounds. The beautiful blues of “Fade Into You” is one of many songs that truly spotlight West’s incomparable guitar tone. I have always felt that Leslie West was one of the best rock and blues guitarists working, and that his tone is unparalleled. “Busted, Disgusted or Dead” finds West teaming up with fellow Woodstock alum Johnny Winter to great effect. Smoldering hot slow blues. On “Feeling Good,” the New York rocker brings along a genuine Twisted Sister to the party, Dee Snider (not my personal favorite screamer/singer, but a great song neverthe- less), and in a true surprise, Leslie delivers a really nice reading of the old Percy Sledge R&B classic, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” done in duet with Jonny Lang. Even without the guest stars, I’d still call Still Climbing

Leslie West’s best work since Nantucket Sleighride. Sounds like a rebirth....Tom Shed has released a hoppin’ new CD, Mama’s Goin Out. The title track swings with a great sounding horn section, and “It Don’t Mean Your Country” lays out the facts for the country wannabe crowd. Tom hits tha nail on the head with the lyric. “Congratulations Standing Bear” is another good one, with a real “cowboy” sound, good finger pickin’, and lyrics about the plight of the American In- dian. I really like the laid back “Scream and Shout, The Relationship Song.” “Tomorrow” is another good one, and then there’s the up tempo banjo workout of “Banjo Goes NASCAR,” a great instrumental with Tom showcasing his multi-instrumentalist skills to full effect on the banjo. It’s obvious that Tom Shed has a real gift for writing songs that fall comfortably into the traditional country music category. (tomshed.com) •
