news 9 MBA scholarship winners raring to go

Two Hampshire men have won scholarships worth £17,600 each to study for their Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees at the University of Portsmouth

Former schoolteacher Danny Glavin, who runs his own charity, and senior IT manager Paul Rolfe start studying this autumn.

The innovation scholarships are being offered for the first time this year in a bid to encourage creativity and innovation and to support those who wish to make a greater leadership contribution.

Glavin, 26, of Fareham, has already raised tens of thousands of pounds for military charities through a national in-schools ’Heroes Day’ he started. The venture became a hit with teachers and pupils across the country and was endorsed by prime minister David Cameron in the House of Commons.

He said studying for his MBA will help build and advance his new charity, The Inspiration Federation, which promotes leadership, citizenship and social responsibility among young people.

Glavin said: “The MBA will enable me to build upon my experiences of creating and driving a

national charity initiative and aid me in my new role of CEO at The Inspiration Federation. It will inevitably have a beneficial impact upon not only my personal professional development, but also the charity itself.“

Rolfe, 34, of Portsmouth, has a strong track record of finding ways of using technology to improve the way public sector organisations are run, improving efficiency and effectiveness.

He is head of technology and innovation at Highbury College, where he was responsible for, among many initiatives, setting up an e-ambassador programme in which students mentor their teachers to make better use of digital technologies and a programme to streamline the college’s application and enrolment process using mobile technologies.

He said: “As a technologist, I am passionate about identifying how digital technologies can be innovatively exploited to improve business processes, ultimately leading to more efficient

and effective methods of working. The MBA will enable me to work with like-minded individuals, sharpen my skills and improve my knowledge of business, innovation and creative thinking.

“I am absolutely delighted to have won the scholarship. This is a great opportunity to build new networks, enhance my skills and acquire knowledge that will support my career and the community organisations that I passionately support.“

The MBA course, which is accredited by the Association of MBAs, comprises two years of block delivery study followed by a research project lasting six months.

The scholarships are funded by Portsmouth Business School and supported by the city’s Cathedral Innovation Centre, and the Royal Society of Arts.
