115-partner firm created in Penningtons Manches merger
Two leading London and South East law firms, Penningtons Solicitors LLP and Manches LLP, have joined forces to become one of the dominant legal players in the region. The deal sees all 265 Manches employees, including 46 partners, move to Penningtons which will operate under the name of Penningtons Manches LLP.
Chief executive David Raine commented: “This agreement fits both our firms’ strategic aims and responds to the ever-changing legal environment in which we now operate.

The strong reputation and combined experience of our people will enable us to maximise our potential in our core practice areas and in the key sectors in which we operate.“
With a combined turnover of £58 million, together with 115 partners and over 600 staff, Penningtons Manches is now represented in seven locations: London, Basingstoke, Cambridge, Godalming, Guildford, Oxford and Reading. In addition to adding depth to the existing corporate,
commercial, employment, property and litigation practice areas, the agreement integrates Penningtons’ well-respected private client team with Manches’ market-leading family practice. It also reinforces sector capabilities, particularly in technology, life sciences, education and banking, where both firms have significant track records.
This move follows a period of sustained growth for Penningtons over the past five years. In 2011 it merged with Dawsons and Wedlake Saint, both City practices, as well as opening offices in Cambridge and Guildford in spring 2012. Manches moved to its new office in Apex Plaza in Reading at the start of 2013, reflecting its ongoing expansion in the Thames Valley.
Raine added: “The legal market is constantly evolving and we do not believe that standing still is an option for any strong, progressive law firm. Our two practices have recognised credentials, providing high-calibre advice to UK and international clients.

Bond Dickinson advises on £25m sale of wind farm
Lawyers at Bond Dickinson have advised long-standing client Renewable Energy Generation (REG), the leading UK renewable energy group, on the sale of its 12 MW operational wind farm at Goonhilly Downs in Cornwall to a fund managed by BlackRock.
The transaction sees REG receiving net cash proceeds of £10.6 million, with BlackRock assuming project debt of £14.5m. REG will continue to manage operations at the wind farm.
Energy partner Sebastian Briggs, who is based at the firm’s Southampton office, led the team who advised REG on this sale. He was supported by Stephen Ryde-Weller, Carly Holt, Luke Gabb, Helen Rumford and Duncan Tilney.
Briggs commented: “We are delighted to have worked with REG on this new deal. This sale is a clear sign of the strength of the partnership between REG and BlackRock, which launched in January this year.“
