to visit parish THE police mobile contact point will be making regular visits to the parish, giving resi- dents the opportunity to dis- cuss any issues and problems with officers. The unit made its first visit to Boxley village green on Sun- day, August 18 and further vis- its are proposed at the same location. Parish councillors welcomed

the scheme, but felt the site was not ideal. Although in the geo- graphic centre of the parish, it is away from the more popu- lated districts and parking could be difficult on Sundays. It was suggested that areas

such as Grove Green could pro- vide easier access and thus more visitors to the surgery. Councillors asked the chairman Cllr Ivor Davies to write to Kent Police suggesting that alterna- tive sites be considered. PCSO Andy Hawthorn said

the scheme was at a very early stage and he would also recom- mend use of a different site. Details of future visits will

be publicised on the Kent po- lice website and on the parish website and notice boards.

Oak trees ‘doing

well at park’ CLLR Geoff Smith reported on his visit to Cobtree Manor Park in Forstal Road, Sandling, wherehewas givenatourby the warden, Eva Girling. He said he was impressed by

the new children’s play area (known as The Castle) and the many magnificent trees. Members were pleased to

hear that the seven oak trees which had been donated by the parish council were still flour- ishing. It was agreed to send a letter

of thanks to Ms Girling for her care for these trees, especially as she had watered them every day during the long dry spell earlier in the year. The warden was currently working on identifying the 200 different species of trees in the park and installing information markers.

BOROUGH councillor Wendy Hinder had taken up residents’ concerns with KCC leader Paul Carter, ward member for the area, over lorries using Old Chatham Road, Sandling, as an overnight stopover. Various problems had been reported, including obstructive parking, litter and smells. After county and borough councillors had held a site meeting to discuss various op- tions, Cllr Carter had emailed her, saying: “Unfortunately, the problem along Old Chatham Road is not uncommon to other parts of the county and there is no easy local solution.” He added: “It is clear that the parking is causing an obstruc- tion to other road users, includ- ing the local bus service, and as

gestion that changes in road markings might help was being considered in more detail. The borough council would

such, Kent Police has the power to carry out enforcement to pre- vent the unsafe/obstructive parking. We will discuss this with Kent Police along with the issues of anti-social behaviour.” However, he pointed out that

there was a very real concern that by using enforcement the lorries would just move to even less suitable locations in resi- dential areas. Cllr Carter added that a sug-

Newnham Park development MEMBERS of the parish council’s environment committee were given a presentation by representatives of DHA planning con- sultants on the proposed development at Newnham Park. This covered, among other things, points which had been high- lighted by the parish council such as the increase in traffic, po- tential parking problems, park and ride, effect of water run-off on the stream feeding the Vinters Valley nature reserve and sustain- ability/renewable energy issues. The committee asked a number of questions but were not in a position to comment in advance of receiving a formal planning application. A site visit was being arranged.

Dove Hill allotments on schedule

CLLR Bob Hinder, who is lead- ing the parish allotments proj- ect, reported further good progress. The installation of gates and fencing at the main entrance and the completion of the water supply was almost com- plete. A letter of thanks had been

sent to St Paul’s Scout Group whose headquarters had been used as a depot by the Royal

Engineers during their work on constructing the access road. A donation had also been

made towards electricity and water bills. Chairman Cllr Ivor Davies thanked Cllr Hinder for all his hard work and noted that the project was on course for allotment plots being let from March 1 next year. Details on how to apply for a

plot and who is eligible will fol- low in due course.

Obection to asbestos waste plan

BOXLEYCouncilhas emphatically re-statedits objections to proposals for an asbestoswaste transfer station at the south end of North DaneWay, Lordswood, following the resubmission of an application for change of use of the existing highways depot there. The parish council said it wished to strongly object, for the same rea- sons submitted in February 2013.

be asked to take any action it deemed appropriate on the en- vironmental issues. While there was not a quick solution to the residents’ prob- lem, various organisations were “working within their con- straints on mitigating the short- term effects while working on a longer term solution”. Reporting this, Cllr Hinder

said she had written back to Cllr Carter saying that this was not satisfactory. She told the parish council: “There are no toilets there, men are washing in public and there is loud music going on, right be- hind the residents’ back doors.”
