Improved mental health care plans
MAIDSTONE is to become a centre of excellence for mental health crisis care in Kent. Following a public consulta-
tion last year, it has been pro- posed that the county town becomes one of three such cen- tres in Kent, the others being at Dartford and Canterbury. Last year’s consultation high- lighted several concerns, partic- ularly over facilities in Medway. Kent andMedway Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Commit- tee (JHOSC) has backed a series of proposals which will see: Increased investment in community services for people who are acutely mentally ill; Developing a detailed plan for the delivery of the three centres of excellence; An action plan which will be overseen by NHS England , Kent County Council andMed- way Council health overview and scrutiny committees; Monitoring of performance as changes are implemented. The eight clinical commis- sioning groups in Kent and Medway will now be asked to approve four recommendations: Investing more in developing crisis resolution and home treatment teams to avoid unnec-
essary admission to hospital; Concentrating acute care beds on three hospital sites; Rapid development of serv- ices so patients can be moved from A Block in Medway; Commencing work to imple- ment care pathways for people needing urgent mental health care. IanAyres, chief officer forNHS
West Kent clinical commission- ing group, said: “The JHOSC has agreed it is correct for us tomove to providing care for people in a mental health crisis in three cen- tres of excellence, backed up by stronger crisis care for people who can be cared for at home.” Dr Karen White, medical di-
rector, Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT) said: “This deci- sion means we can move for- ward with the provision of excellentmental health services for people in Kent and Medway. “It’s an opportunity for us to strengthen community services for people in mental health cri- sis, supporting more care at home, which is what most peo- ple want, and to deliver care in modern accommodation de- signed to meet the needs of service users and staff.”
Mayor and MP join the fun
MP Helen Grant joined Maidstone residents Karl and Rohini Emanuelsson for the launch of their new en- terprise – Kikiland, lo- cated in The Mall. Karl and Rohini
wanted a good play place in town for their three children, so they set about creating one! They cater for babies and children up to eight, and have a café serving organic coffee and healthy snacks. Kikiland, which has a tropical theme, aims to stimulate the imagina-
tions of young children. Karl andRohini are building links with local par- ent and child groups and charitiesworking with children.
Plan for seven houses on farmland
HILLREED Homes has applied to build seven homes on agri- cultural land in Detling. The new homes would be lo-
cated off Hockers Farm, on the east side of Hockers Lane, near Orchard View, would have 15 parking spaces. A supporting statement said: “The cul-de-sac layout will
provide sufficient turning, parking and private amenity space for each dwelling, whilst the grain remains consistent with that of Orchard View. There are not considered to be any instances of overlooking within the development.” Maidstone Council will de- termine the application.
Post office can be converted to home FRED Ferrier has been given permission to convert the former post office at 62West Street, Harrietsham into a residential build- ing. The 15th century timber-framed building, which was a cob- blers in the 1800s, was a post office from the 1960s until 2008.
