Town’s Tories Treats to help cancer research

MAIDSTONE and The Weald Conservative Association looks certain to move its offices out of town. The group is planning to

merge administration with the Conservatives’West Kent Group, currently covering Tonbridge and Malling, Chatham and Aylesford and TunbridgeWells. Membership losses have led to declining income, which, says chairman Cllr John Wilson, means “the association cannot continue in its present form”. The association moved from

Rock House in Terrace Road, Maidstone, several years ago to a house in Albion Place, Maid- stone. This will be sold to re-fi- nance the association, ahead of borough elections next June and the next general election, possi- bly in 2015. The association, with branches throughout the con- stituency, is the political and fi- nancial powerhouse behind its MP (Helen Grant), and its KCC and Maidstone Council mem- bers. A key role is fundraising. The association is talking with Andrew Kennedy, agent for the West Kent Group, and Cllr Wil- son said: “They are happy we should join and share costs while retaining our operational independence.”

Jason Rose were thinking about starting a family when a routine smear test in January revealed shewas suffering from large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the cervix. Becky was given a trachelectomy at St Thomas’ Hospital, which removed her cervix, but left her womb and fertility intact.

After four rounds of chemotherapy, it looks like things are clear, but Iwill be checked regularly as it is so ag- gressive, it could re-occur.” Becky was full of praise for her employers and her colleagues. She said: “They have been ab-

Workhub for small firms

SOLE traders and small businesses in Maidstone could soon ben- efit from sharing a new “workhub”. The council is considering setting up aworkhub in the town cen-

tre – an “office when needed” workspace – and has been seeking input from the business community about how it might work. A meeting was due to take place at the Town Hall last week to

hear from a team from UKWorkhubs about how such schemes op- erate in other parts of the country. They say the workhub would give residents “access to inspiring shared office facilities designed to appeal to the modernways peo- ple work”. A spokesman for the council said: “The idea is to create a centre

where small (often home-based) businesses can collaborate with one another, use top-quality equipment and meet clients in an im- pressive but friendly environment.”
