He stated that his top three department goals are increa- seing fuel mileage by reducing idle time, increasing safety awareness of drivers through regular memos, handouts and presentations, and retaining the very best bus drivers. He added that he hopes to, “keep in touch with drivers on a daily basis if possible and keep an open-door policy so the drivers can talk to me anytime.” In nearby Indiana, Ryan noted that two of his three
objectives were to better train technicians on engines using the Cummins Virtual College, to accurately diagnose and repair the newer units and to utilize the department’s new break room for training, which allows for smaller groups and more peer-to-peer training on-site instead of off-site. Bobby Williams of Spring ISD in Texas shared that
hands-on training, one-on-one training and a monthly safe- ty meeting with his direct supervisor are recent innovations he has implemented. He also said his department goals are a “paperless shop to improve time management, parts inven- tory control and down time (plus) shop training to improve technician productivity and to cut parts cost.”
