NAVISTAR ADDS CUMMINS ISB ENGINE TO MEDIUM-DUTY LINEUP; BUS PRODUCTION IN 2014

N

avistar announced in September it would offer the Cummins ISB 6.7-liter engine with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions aftertreat- ment for its IC Bus CE Series school buses.

Te Cummins ISB marks Navistar’s first medium-duty

vehicle engine with SCR aftertreatment technology. Offi- cials said the engine is the “next critical piece” the company has to offer in the medium-duty market to answer customer demand, and follows the success the engine has seen in the heavy-duty market since its introduction earlier this year. Navistar will continue to offer Exhaust Gas Recircula-

tion-only versions of its midrange engines utilizing existing medium-duty emissions credits, which officials said the com-

pany expects to last at least through next year. Still, Bill Kozek, president of Navistar's North American Truck and Parts division, said the decision to offer the Cummins ISB was not based solely on credits. “It was time to give our medium-duty truck and bus customers a choice, and we thought the timing

was perfect,” Kozek noted during a media briefing, adding that relatively minimal re-engineering work was performed to introduce the ISB engine. Te company said it is already taking orders for buses and trucks powered by the Cummins ISB. Regular production for CE Series school buses is scheduled for late January 2014. Initial truck builds will begin later this month, and regular production is slated for December. Shortly thereafter, officials said, customers should expect to see some demos at dealerships. Officials said the next steps of its comprehensive midrange SCR engine strategy would be an- nounced at a later date.

CHP Commends School Bus Driver for Fending Off Intruders As students headed back to

school, a California school bus driver was honored for bravery reminiscent of slain Alabama bus driver Charles Poland. On Aug. 13 bus driver

NUNEZ

Deysi Nunez of the Lamont School District received the California Highway Patrol Commander's Certificate of

Commendation for her courage. Poland has been widely hailed as a hero after

dying in January as he protected students from an armed intruder on his school bus. Meanwhile, on May 30, Nunez prevented two men from boarding her yellow bus, which carried roughly 80 students at the time. “We're really proud of her,” said Elena Dema-

rah, school bus officer for the CHP's Bakersfield area. “I’m glad she did what she did — she pro- tected her students on board and around her.” Te CHP oversees school bus inspections and

certification of drivers. Demarah recalled that Nunez was one of the first school bus drivers she ever certified, back in January 2012.

28 School Transportation News October 2013 Ü BIZ BITES According to the CHP, two men suddenly

appeared at Nunez' bus door when she stopped to drop off students at Myrtle Avenue School. When the twentysomething men complained that students had thrown something out the win- dow, Nunez replied that they needed to talk with her, not the students. “She was authoritative. She told them, ‘No,

you’re not getting on my bus’,” recalled Demarah. “When she said the CHP was coming to take a report, they took off.” Nunez told officers the men were driving a

gray sedan, but the car was parked so closely behind the bus that she could not get the license plate number. "Tey didn't stick around to explain themselves or their actions," stated CHP Lt. Julian Irigoyen, who presented the commendation to Nunez at a ceremony. “One of the things we do is honor (bus drivers) not only for driving, but for these actions of heroism.” Demarah told STN she will send in her recom- mendation to nominate Nunez for the department's Bus Driver of the Year award in February. Te award recipient will then be announced in April.
