Canoe cash helps Scouts restore lake
LARKFIELD Scouts have been in action using their canoeing skills to help clear blanket weed from Clare Lake, East Malling. The weed growth has restricted water flow and smells in the summer heat.
Larkfield Scouts leader Chris Hardy was asked by local county councillor Trudy Dean to help by floating and anchoring bales of barley corn into the lake to help restrict weed growth.
The canoes were purchased using grant money from Cllr Dean’s county council fund at a Dragon's Den-style event last October.
Chris said: “The day was a great success, and the Scouts have offered to help pull up weed growth as part of their work towards a future conservation award. We were pleased to help with this very worthwhile project to restore the lake which means a lot to local people."

DOES your group need money to help with a local project?
All county councillors have £10,000 per year to give to projects in the area they represent; Trudy Dean has for the last four years chosen to give local people the power to decide who should get money. Each group has three minutes in which they must persuade the audience of local residents that they should receive up to a maximum of £2,000 for their project. At the end all residents have electronic voting pads to choose their favourite projects, and the popular vote determines the winners.
Plants were crushed during the summer when a car crashed through the bollards.
The parish council has recovered £200 from the driver towards the new planting.
If you can help, please contact the parish clerk Carole d’Silva on 01732 870872 or at
Carole.wmpc@btconnect.com.
So if your group works in East or West Malling or Larkfield you can apply to take part in this year's Dragons Den-style event which will be held on Saturday, October 19 at The Malling School from 12.30pm to approximately 4pm. All applicants must be able to stay to the end to vote. Hurry and book your place as last year’s event saw a record number of 140 people attending.

Cllr Dean said: “I always look forward to these events as each year groups find more entertaining ways of winning support. We have financed everything from a handrail, defibrillators, cooking equipment, local schools working with musicians, sound equipment for local schools radio
...the list goes on. Lunch is provided so if you just want to vote for who should get the money, or you want to apply to receive one, book early as last year's event saw a record 140 people attending."
