It allows administrators access to reports in real-time and the documentation of actual events. Users also can share data on students, vehicles, trips and stops. Meanwhile, Zonar Systems offers its

ZPass+ student tracking solution mobile app for iPhones and Android smartphones. It works with the ZPass tracking solution, and transmits both the vehicle and ridership data to a secure database for transporters to access. Parents also can access their child’s ZPass+ information through a pass- word-protected website, but only if a school district offers the program. Tough only currently available in the United Kingdom, Trapeze Group offers the TMT Bus Pass app that acts like a mobile ticket pass. It can be used either standalone or integrated with existing transportation software, and works across all platforms, on all smartphones and all Internet-enabled mobile devices such as tablets. It includes security features, so it can’t be copied. When it expires or is cancelled, the app is auto- matically removed from the mobile device, according to the company’s website.

Josh Rice, director of transportation at New Caney ISD in Texas, reviews an evaluation, which was created by an app, with one of his bus drivers.

More apps are to come that are designed

specifically for transportation. For exam- ple, Zonar’s 20/20 portable tablet, which provides an open platform to increase driver productivity, comes equipped with four apps exclusive to the tablet, which has been in beta mode with commercial trucking fleets. Users can also download other off-the-shelf apps or write their own. Zonar said it is also developing more apps specifically for the school bus industry. “Pre-developed applications for the 2020 will continue to grow and evolve as Zonar and third-party developers create new applications and integrations on the platform to increase bus safety and driver productivity,” said Chris Oliver, Zonar’s chief marketing officer.

Good Arsenal As technology changes the way in which students learn, it, too, will change how student transportation operates in different ways. While some apps are viewed as sup- plemental tools to help student transporters, other apps are beginning to be considered as core, standard operating programs. For Spagnola, the Austim Speaks app she uses is her supplemental tool to help her spe- cial-education bus drivers with many chal- lenges on the school bus, but it has become a part of her standard training procedures. “It’s a very challenging drive. Te job the

drivers do with the students they transport, changes constantly,” she said. “Tat’s why having additional resources at our fingertips gives us additional devices in our toolbox.” —
